Event Description
SVF Foundation will be hosting its Second Annual Visitors Day Saturday June 7, 2008. Once again, the doors will open to the general public for one special day. Visitors will take a self guided tour through the historic site, view several endangered breeds of livestock, and learn about SVF’s scientific mission.
SVF is a non-profit organization situated on a beautiful historic farm in Newport, RI. The mission of SVF is to preserve endangered breeds of livestock used for food and fiber. In collaboration with Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, SVF collects germplasm – semen and embryos – from rare breeds of cattle, sheep and goats. Germplasm is then cryogenically frozen and placed in long term storage using liquid nitrogen, where it may remain for hundreds of years before being thawed and used to reawaken an extinct breed.
Several embryo transfer lambs will be on exhibit at SVF Visitors Day, educating the public about SVF’s various programs. There will also be sheep-shearing and cryogenic demonstrations on going throughout the day.
This event is free to the general public. No parking will be allowed on-site, however free parking and shuttle service will be provided from Fort Adams State Park. Trolleys will be available for service 9:30am – 3pm; gates will be open 8am – 3:30pm
