Event Details

Start Date: August 23, 2008 - End Date: August 23, 2008

Time: 9:00AM

Event Description

The nationally famous 31st Annual Fools’ Rules Regatta, sponsored by the Jamestown Yacht Club will be held Saturday, August 23rd on the East Ferry Beach in Jamestown. The rain date will be the following day, Sunday, August 24th.

Construction of the unique sailing craft will begin with the firing of the cannon at 9:00AM. Contestants have two hours to build their vessels from non-marine items. Past years have produced vessels from Volkswagen's, doghouses, picnic tables, sandboxes, ladders, trash cans, hay bales, and giant blocks of ice!! All vessels must be wind-powered, and crew must wear Coast Guard approved life preservers.

Entrants compete in one of five classes: One to four persons in respective classes, and the Unlimited Class, for fie or more sailing fools. Just completing the 500-yard course is difficult for many.

Awards will be given to the first three finishers in each class immediately after the final race. Competition is always fierce for the three most prestigious awards: “The Karl Smith Most Ingenious Design”, “The Worst Example of Naval Architecture”, and the “Frank Newman Judges Award”, given to the boat and crew with the best historical theme.

Entry forms and rules are available at various Jamestown businesses and on the Jamestown Yacht Club’s web site: www.jyc.org. Chief Fool will again be Chris Powell. For more information call 401-423-1492.

PARKING DURING THE EVENT ONLY IS AVAILABLE ON THE UPPER SHORE BY HILL GREEN. THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF THE PROPERTY OWNERS. PLEASE TREAT THE PROPERTY WITH RESPECT AND REMOVE ALL VEHICLES AFTER THE REGATTA.

What Do You Think of the State's New Ability to Track Illegal Immigrants?

  • I Like it, illegal immigrants are finding work easily while I rot in line at the unemployment office
  • Bad Idea, These people are taking sub-minimum wage jobs anyway and actual citizens are getting snared in this E-Verify system
