UPDATE: A Lincoln family is remembering a 12-year-old girl who died on Saturday and tested positive for the H1N1 virus. ABC6 will bring you more details on this story as soon as it becomes available
*****
Skyla Jamie Reposa-Alves was a seventh grader at Lincoln Middle School, she got sick with flu like symptoms last week, got better for a few days, then got sick again.
Saturday night, she died at Hasbro Children's Hospital. Her grandfather says she was a friendly, loving child.
ABC6 News has more on this story...

Rhode Island Health Officials have announced that a girl, under the age of 18, has died after showing flu like symptoms. There has been no information as to whether this death is in anyway linked to the H1N1 virus.
What we do know is that the school is working closely with the health department to get to the bottom of this. ABC6 Reporter Tom Langford has more...

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island health authorities have
opened school-based swine flu vaccination clinics, the same day they announced the second death of a child with flu-like symptoms.
State health department spokeswoman Annemarie Beardsworth said Monday the state is investigating the weekend death of a girl under 18 who had a flu-like illness. Authorities said last week a 12-year-old Bristol girl who died tested positive for swine flu.
The voluntary school vaccinations began on Monday for children whose parents have signed a consent form. The clinics for middle and high school students will take place during the school day, while elementary school students can get vaccinated in the afternoon and evening.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE St. James School IS IN LINCOLN-- THE HEALTH DEPT. IS CLAIMING THIS IS AN ACTUAL SCHOOL LOCATED IN LINCOLN - AND THEY GAVE SHOTS TO THEM ON MONDAY. NOW everyone who doesn't know better thinks Lincoln School Children are getting their shots, and the Health Dept. is on this--THE LINCOLN MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL NOT HAVE THEIR SHOTS UNTIL DEC. 15. Is the Health Dept. Hoping that all the kids in LMS get the flu before then?

Why in the world are we playing russian roulette with our childrens lives? Everyone is screaming get the shot! Well guess what? A lot of our schools are not getting the shot for well over a month. So what are we supposed to do? Every morning I send my children to school unprotected. I have no choice. If it was just a couple of weeks till the shot was available , I would just keep them home. But what do you do when they would miss 6 weeks of school or more? Shut down these schools until then!

This is so sad. I brought my son to the doctors this mornig with Flu like systoms and they said he had influenza A and to just give him tyneol and motrin and just make sure he is getting enough fluids and to watch him. I am so nervous. I have to other children and I am trying to keep them sepertaed but it is hard. I dont understand either why they aint giving our kids tamiflu!!!! Should I keep all of them home from school??

Please CLOSE Lincoln Schools!!! On 10/30 Lincoln Central Elementary had 72 students absent! (with Flu like symptoms) What's more important our children or missing a week of education??? Skylar went to school with my daughter, and my heart goes out to her family...too fast! At the least, CLOSE the schools on Friday, in rememberance of Skylar, so they can clean up the schools 3 day weekend. Lincoln Middle School had an outbreak of E coli, from beef the kids ate at a school trip.

I also think that school nurses should listen to teachers and send children home when they are sick and infecting others. Too many times do we have sick children in our rooms and then find out that the child had the swine flu.

As a teacher, I just wish that parents would be forced to keep their kids home if they were sick. Too many people send their kids to school when they are sick. I am a working parent, too. I understand how difficult it can be but I stay home with my child if she is sick or get help from family.

you cannot "treat" the flu. it has to run its course like every other virus. my daughter was diagnosed this morning with it and will be staying out of school until next week. it would have been nice if the shots that were promised were available before this happened.

The problem with trying to keep the kids home when they start showing symptoms of the flu is that they were already contageous up to 3 days before they showed symptoms. So how can you stop the spread except for closing schools to try and stop the spread. Take a note from Hong Kong when they went through SARS.

My daughter had the swine and I was very worried because she's wheelchair bound and it scared us to death. I was worried that my other daughter would also get sick she's only 5 and also has the same disability as my older daughter best we could all do is wash our hands as much as possible avoid the spread of the germ clean door knobs cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. JUST WASH YOUR HANDS PLEASE EVERYONE!!!!!

I agree We need to close the schools till all kids get the shot. That way kids who have the symptoms will have to stay home Too many parents send their kids to school when their kids are sick and it is usually because their jobs have a fit if they stay out of work all companies need to allow parents of children to stay home without fear of losing a job because your child is sick, If this happend maybe this would be contained.

It is clear that no one is going to close the schools unless they can't function. I wish enough teachers would call in sick that thay would have to close, I have already pulled my kids out for a week. On Aquidneck island there ae 25% absentee rates! School officials are still not closing the schools.

I don't care what the health dept. says about closing schools! I say close them until all children are vaccinated, then make up the time in the Summer. Keep the kids home and out of the malls and movie theaters. This is getting scary. CLOSE ALL SCHOOLS!!!

My 4 year old has the flu, but we don't even know if it's the H1N1 flu since doctor's are told by the CDC that they don't have to test for it. The pediatrician gave us a prescription for Tamiflu though, which is also used to treat the H1N1 virus. So if our children do come down with the flu, we wouldn't even know for sure if it is the H1N1 flu or not. I don't want my daughter to get an unnecessary H1N1 vaccine later on if she already had the H1N1 flu, but there's no way of telling!

If people kept their sick kids HOME the others wouldnt be in danger of getting sick. Some parents dont care and send them to school anyway. I bet if they started throwing fines at these parents they would start using common sense and keep them home

Do you think maybe the DR's are not taking care of these illnesses the way they should be? Why didnt the Dr see her lungs were full of fluid? Because they probably sent her home and said plenty of fluids and mortin/tylenol for the fever as they are telling every sick child out there. If she went the the DR I would think about malpractice, failure to diagnose.

I'd like to know why Rhode Island is so far behind other states in getting the vaccines for our children. In neighboring states, vaccines were available for school age children for 2 weeks. Our school clinics make some children sitting ducks for H1N1. And why no vaccine available to high risk children?

Commissioner Gish is more concerned with the NECAP test and seniority in schools to care about the children. Close the schools now. The children spread germs over the bus and then go to school to do the same. Give our children a chance. Vaccinate now and close the schools or at least limit activities.

Why close the schools? Kids are kids and are going to go hang out with their freinds, share drinks, cigarettes, phones, etc. whethere they are at school or sitting on your couch. Panic and chaos are not the answers. Be proactive and keep your children home if they display the symptoms.
