New Bedford picks Connecticut educator to lead schools

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - A Connecticut educator has been picked to lead the New Bedford public school system.

Doctor Portia Selene Bonner was unanimously chosen this morning by the New Bedford school committee to replace Michael Longo, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Bonner is currently the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the Hampden, Connecticut public school system.

She was selected from a final group of three and will earn around $160,000 in New Bedford.

Bonner was also a finalist for the superintendent's job in Lowell, where that city's school committee was expected to meet tonight to also name their pick.

New Bedford school officials praise Bonner for what they call devotion to her profession and her depth of knowledge.
