You Paid For It Update: Councilman: Take-home Police Vehicles Unnecessary

John Eagan

With gas prices now averaging $3.50 a gallon, paying for it has become a real struggle for many.
But an ABC 6 investigation finds that more than 60 Providence Police Department vehicles, double the number from 5 years ago, go home with officers every day at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars to taxpayers.
At least one local councilman is not pleased with this situation.
ABC 6 chief reporter Jim Hummel has the fallout from this 'You Paid For It' investigation...

DOES THE IRS NOW THEY ARE DRIVING THESE CAR HOME AND WHO'S CLAIMING THE TAXES ON INCOME

If all law enforcement personell were using assigned patrol cars to shuttle home everyday, then its absurd. IF 2 or 12 are exceptions, then the tax payers need to know why! An acceptable plausible answer eliminates the concern!Any answer is better than waiting for a "you paid for it" expose. If that happens its already too late!

So what will come out of this story?? Will the Police Chief stop so many officers from taking their vehicles home?? Will those officers who utilize their unmarked police vehicles for personal use, on/off duty, be disciplined? Like any other investigation..what will be the consequences/remedies? It just depends on the players involved..as usual..nothing will happen to the A-Team members. It will probably be business as usual like this investigation never took place. Pathetic...

Hey Jim, The RI State Police, all 200 take their cars home. Are they excluded from the mud throwing?

When tax payers are footing the bill the money comes from a bottomless pit. This is the problem with anything run by the government, nobody is accountable. The taxes keep rolling in and used by politicians and their cronies.

Aren't all police on call to come in a big emergency. I know some have to come in more often but aren't they paid overtime to come in at a 4 hour minimum. Unless they are on call that night. leave the car in the city, We can't afford your perks. As far as the chiefs comments what a waste of our taxpayers money, this guy would lie to his mother to make himself look better

Something has to give. Take your personal car, you can get reimbursed for mileage otherwise, turn in the vehicle or find another job. If your getting paid for attending emergency situations, does it specify in the job duties that you will get a TOTALLY-FREE vehicle to get home? Remember: You could be a winner. We can't continue to foot the bill that can clearly be handled personally by the perpetrator.

Give me a break, COPS do enough in this state, this is just the media once again trying to stir the pot. Some bigwig must have gotten stopped recently for them to spend 2 months on this... Everyone hates a cop until they need one. Some of you need to grow up.

How could you possibly make a statement like Emergency Vehicles. That's a firetruck, rescue, not a two-bit,overpaid cop that takes 2 hours to respond to a situation. They all think they are above the law especially this arrogant chief. R.I .THE GREAT STATE OF CORRUPTION

listen nothing will happen with this situation just because it's rhode island.plain and simple this state is so corupt it's not even funny it's a shame on us because we deal with it.

perfect example of why this state is in the mess we are in! ask one of those policeman that take cars home if they would like to pay for my gas and insurance to get to and from work.

Jim Hummell is a scumbag. Tough guy with a camera behind him. Why not show his house on tv. Anybody know his address? I wonder how much he gets paid. Of course the answer will be it doesnt matter because abc 6 is a private company, but actually it does because the public-all of us pays his salary too thorugh the cost of advertising on that channel, which is passed onto the consumer.

Saturday, May 3 at 1:10 AM Another disappointed tax payer wrote ...

why in the hell would you need to take the unmarked car home every night if you would never make it in time for an emergency. that is just a waste of tax payers money. either live within the city limits or drive your own car and use your own gas. Good job abc6 for the report. I don't think the police officers houses should have been on the tv though. if they are making a big salary like that then they can certainly pay for their own gas like the rest of us poor tax payers.

Saturday, May 3 at 12:21 AM My opinion... wrote ...

People are confusing things here...these officers are taking these vehicles home as a PERK. Schools are suffering budget cuts while the providence police chief is gladly allowing an officer to take a car over to Connecticut. Rhode Island property is being driven into Connecticut where it is of absolute no use to anyone but that off duty officers leisure. This is sad and wasteful.

Saturday, May 3 at 12:12 AM Jo wrote ...

Is the police chief serous! He comments are insane! I wonder what the Mayor thinks of all this... Typical RI....why are so many people leaving this state???

Maybe the reporter should do more research but of course leaving out good points would not make the story and someone would be out of a job. I have a feeling Wilding does NOT put his life on the line everyday and is blinded my one side of the story. HOW ABOUT THIS...Maybe SOME not all of the police officers take their cars home because they are in positions where they have to respond back to the station in an emergency where they are required to be there. Hence, the take home "emergency vehicles

Are you kidding me? Why do people always look for way to cut necessary services. When it's 3AM and member of the BCI team takes an hour or 45 minutes to get to the scene there will be a special report on police response times. How about looking into the cost of living for the city rather than look to cut the people who protect you from day to day.

  • I Like it, illegal immigrants are finding work easily while I rot in line at the unemployment office
  • Bad Idea, These people are taking sub-minimum wage jobs anyway and actual citizens are getting snared in this E-Verify system
