Westport Students Suspended for Drinking on School Trip to Europe

John Eagan

It was the trip of a lifetime for nearly 40 Westport High School students...8 days trekking across Spain and France.
But what they did on their European vacation could haunt these students for years.
While the students were legally able to drink alcohol in the countries they visited, school officials say it violated the student handbook.
So the school suspended nearly 20 of them for 9 days, leaving some parents outraged and their children facing some serious consequences.
Now they are voicing their concerns to school administrators, trying to get the suspension taken off their permanent records.
ABC 6 reporter Jennifer Gannon has the latest on the suspensions....

I drank hard cider we made on our apple orchard since age 11. We had wine at dinner on Sundays from age 12 till present. No alcoholics in my family. I am 55 now!

Under age 18 and alone in foreign countries for extended periods of time, without adequate supervision and care. What were the consequences for the teachers for their gross, negligent and reckless lack of supervision? Sounds like the freedom was condoned to me.

These kids knew exactly what they were doing and thought they could get away with it. Bravo to the school for having the courage to hold the kids accountable. If kids want to drink their way through Europe, then they should do it on their own time, not on a school trip.

The thought that this will "affect" the rest of their lives is ludicrous. It will affect them now and perhaps in the near future, but to say that it will affect them their entire lives is a bit much. Perhaps it will help them realize that there are consequences to their actions and for the school in question, well they should definitely make sure that everyone is aware of the rules and not assume that everyone knows them and will follow them. Certainly a lesson all schools should learn from.

As a student who went on the trip I can say that we did not sign anything saying we were to abide by school rules. And if we were to abide by school rules then the administration should have warned us beforehand and shown some involvement, but they never showed up to a meeting for the trip or anything. It would be a different situation if the school had made it clear that a trip on vacation time with EF tours not the school, was to be treated the same as a prom, field trip or other school event.

The students were in a place where purchasing and consuming alcohol is legal. The chaperones cannot possibly be expected to watch their every move. They are responsible teenagers. And, if they signed a form committing to abstaining from alcohol on the trip, they should be held responsible for their actions. Children need to learn that there are consequences to breaking a committment. In this case, on a school trip, the consequence will be a suspension. Fair enough.

The fact that 18 year-olds are of age to vote, go to war and die, and be treated as adults by the criminal justice system but yet not considered old enough to drink is ridiculous in and of itself and worthy of examination. The actions of the school in this case add another layer of paternalistic ridiculousness to the entire case and serve as a further example of the continued infantilization of our youth.

a school sponsored trip is school business. this means school rules cover all activities on school property or a trip. then the kids signed a paper to obey the rules for no drinking or drugs or inappropriate behavior. you break the rules you pay the piper. suck it up and deal with it. every action, bad behavior has consequences. there is no one exempt. if the superintendent says nothing will happen then so be it. otherwise learn from the punishment and not do it again.

How about the fact that these children we're in a place where the rules are all-together different. I don't have an issue with what they did. But if there is an issue then when on a school trip arent they supposed to be supervised and if they were..what about the fact that those supervising them allowed this to happen. Did the supervisors get suspended without pay? probably not. And if they were not supervised then that is an issue the school should revisit and maybe rethink their own mistakes .

There must be a more sensitive and compassionate way to address a situation like this. Children should be held accountable for thier actions, however consequences that will affect the rest of their lives is unreasonable. This is the new wave of punishment that students with perfectly clean histories are facing in many public and private schools. Warnings and counseling are never used anymore. Criminals are treated more fairly! I am not a Westport resident, just a concerned parent.-

There is a lot of gray area with this issue. Many parents 'OK' their child to consume alcohol where it is legal. Many schools are not FULLY CLEAR with ALL students and chaperones regarding where they stand on the issue PRIOR to the trip. Students suffer unexpected consequences that were NOT clearly outlined. Had students known that having a drink in a country whre they were legal would result in school suspension, it is likely that only 1 or 2 would have violated the rule. School
