URI Students, ACLU Suing Town of Narragansett Over Anti-Partying Law

John Eagan

Last year the town passed an ordinance allowing police to slap bright orange stickers on so-called "unruly homes".
But there is one problem with the law, it doesn't give students and landlords a chance to appeal.
Now, a lawsuit filed in Superior Court says the law fails to define unruly behavior and unfairly targets large groups of people who have done nothing wrong.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Next they will be able to convict you with a crime without bothering to even charge you first.

Mike, nothing you said pertains to the actual article, regardless of the intentionsof the ordinance, the ACLU is claiming it's unconstitutional. Of course the police department is going to say that. Try looking at the situation from the other side. No, i am not a student.

I am a high school student an i actually just did a senior project on the URI party law, and from what i researched and with working with the departement found that the way they are handling these parties is right, they are only looking out for the safety of the students while also trying to maintain order with the noise ordinance.

Do You Think the Rhode Island General Assembly Will Fix the Budget Deficit?

  • HA! No, they're going to chase their tails and point fingers and get nothing done. Business as usual.
  • I think some progress can be made. It's going to take some painful cuts and creativity, but we can do this.
