Former Durfee Star and Celtics Guard Chris Herren Found Unconscious with Heroin in Car

Curt Brown, SouthCoastToday.com

FALL RIVER - Former Celtics' point guard Chris Herren was found unconscious, slumped over the wheel of a car with a hypodermic needle and a bag of heroin on the passenger seat next to him Wednesday night after a minor accident, police said.
Mr. Herren, 32, who lists an address in Fall River, was not arrested because he was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, for treatment, according to Sgt.
Paul Bernier, public information officer for the Fall River Police Department.
However, Sgt. Bernier said, Mr. Herren will be summonsed into Fall River District Court for reckless operation of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of drugs and possession of heroin.
The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at the corner of Oak Grove Avenue and Saxon Street.
Mr. Herren, a star at B.M.C. Durfee High School, Fall River, who went to Fresno State University, played for the Denver Nuggets and the Celtics in the NBA.

Fresno State. Why not call my mom or his mom? Well because my dad was our hero, we loved him more than life itself and didn't want to get him in trouble. So me and my 9 year old cousin asked to ladies in the parking lot to take us home which was in the hood. Thank god they took us but we were to young kids home all alone trying to hide the fact my dad never showed, Thank God for those 2 nice women bcuz my dad was on a bender and ended up in palm springs and didn't arrive home until the following

It was magical watching my favorite BBall player Chris Herren school this Rookie of the Year NBA all star and future hall of famer. I thought for sure Chris was destined for NBA greatness. DRUGS would put a stop to my dream and his. Well after the scrimage was over my father still hadn't shown up it had gotten dark and the gym had closed. Guy was my idol my favorite basketball player. My dad is a recovering addict been battling the disease for over 20 years. He met Chris in Fresno County Jail and later was in the same halfway house with him. I attended a Jerry Tarkanian BBall camp at Fresno State when Chris was playing there i was 11 years old. I asked Cris if he knew my father and with a huge smile said yes he's a great guy. Well that same day Jason Kidd made an appearance at the camp. After camp was out for the day...continued

When Chris was young, local parents didn't allow their kids to play sports against Chris Chris always had to compete outside his element, Chris felt different, unwanted in his natural realm. Chis felt second best, sometimes third. Wanted to play football to relieve his deamons, never did, should have at Fresno and would possibly have been the greatest two sport star Americas'ever produced, Bo, and Deion couldn't hoop like Chris, Jordan couldn't play football. Paul Newman is dead, Not Chris.

It doesn't matter if it's a former pro basketball player or a regular person, unless you've been there or had a family member or friend who has an addition you'll never quite understand what people go thru. The unfortunate thing is that your station sees this as a quick headline and doesn't bother to look beyond this for the reasons this may happen and in turn the information you provide may help hundreds of other people.
