I live in Taunton, Mulcahey can be tough. While kids do express himself through art, and very few 10 year-olds actually carry through with such threats - it does happen. Let me repeat that - it does happen. If you ignore something like this - you may be putting this child and his future classmates and teachers in harms way as this boy clearly needs some type of support.

is this school in an area where teens are running around shooting people? I'd be worried myself if that were the case.

Unbelievable.... what has this mad world become ? As a child, I and my friends played with toy guns constantly. .... and we are all responsible citizens now. Subject a 10 year old to charges? People like this teacher should not have contact with children. Andrew Johnson Cape Town

It is unbelievable that any teacher or school would respond in this way over a 10 year old child's fantasy drawing. Absurd. This teacher should be sent back to school, and the school administrators should be fired. Any prosecutor who acts on this should be de-elected at the next election. All adults involved in this should be forced to watch 100 hours of violent television to see the Hollywood fantasy garbage which is forced down the throats of American children by age 10. Unbelievable.

I'm afraid of any world where the authorities can take away the right to get feelings out on paper. Imagine how many people would have gone insane, or violent, if they couldn't get it out on paper? This kid should have been spoken to to see if there's a real problem, and then introduced to a sketchbook or a journal - that only he can see!

If this 10 year old boy's case is so serious, why aren't girls treated with similar "intensity" by the authorities when they do things that are threats to other students? See http://www.king5.com/education/stories/NW_052109WAB-cartoon-kill-piper-KC.49c70d9.html

I agree with Shay and Renee. No one would want their child to be on the receiving end of this drawing. The teacher is responsible to maintain a safe environment for all children. This child (who should not have been named in the article) does need to speak with a counselor - yes, expressing oneself through art is important but it is still an expression, just as words or actions are. This is a threat, drawn, spoken, or acted upon. Anne, Pawtucket

What if were your child he drew the picture of and not the teacher.? How would you then feel about this? Would you still want this child to interact daily with your children?

This child scribbled a picture to express his feelings. He did not make a threat to anyone. How many boys draw fight scenes and cartoons of guns killing that they see from video games? Why did this teacher not take the time to sit down and discuss this with the child and his parent? He has not had any behavior problems in the past and I would question the teachers professionality in handling the children in the class room. She over reacted and the bogus charges should be dropped.

Isn't it a bit disrespectful to say a minors name in the news media? You can get into a LOT of trouble with the family of that person if they find out about this. Unless you have parental permission to have his name on this article, I would suggest taking it off.

The boy has a right to express his feelings. Drawning in itself is none violent, this drawing is the boys emotions going on paper. Yes it looks violent, but maybe this was a silent plea for someone to help this kid. This teacher should be sitting down with the boy and a councler to find out WHY he hates her so much! Not pressing charges! If I came across this teacher on the street I'd tell her to go find another line of work!

I don't think criminal charges is the way to go however. The child was only expressing his anger through art. He didn't make any verbal threats to or at the teacher. Everyone takes things so serious now a days. I think people are overreacting. Unless you are a psychologist don't pretend to be able to diagnose the child as having a problem.

I think we should be consern when a child at this age is thinking of doing harm to another individual. There has been to much violence in the past with children hurting each other or teachers. This child obviously has a problem.
