Book About Drinking, Drugs and Killing a Teacher Brings Controversy to Local Middle School

John Eagan

First there was the book...then the movie.  It is called 'Killing Mr. Griffin', by author Lois Duncan.

The story is about a group of high school students drinking booze, smoking pot, and plotting to kidnap their English teacher.  But is it appropriate for young teenagers?

A 7th grade teacher at Newport's Thompson Middle School didn't think so.  The book was read and the PG-13 movie was watched...in class!

ABC 6 reporter Parker Gavigan has the story...

I read this book over 5 years ago in her class, and it is an excellent book. those who have a problem with students reading this book need to look around and realize their our far more important issues in our world.

This teacher is my teacher, she's amazing. This is nothing. It was a well written book, and our teacher told us if it got too heavy or if we didn't like it we could go into a different room. No one held a gun to our heads and made us stay there and listen to it. We made the choice to. With what we grow up with in this day and age, this is nothing. I read the book and saw the movie, and it didn't make me want to smoke pot, do drugs or kill my English teacher; she's amazing.
