A Providence neighborhood known more for it's Zagat ratings than crime statistics has now been thrust into the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
A young couple out on the town in Federal Hill were jumped and repeatedly slashed, and they say it's all because of the way they look.
It all happened around 10:30 pm when Rury Gillooly, a Caucasian man, and his girlfriend 20-year old Gwen Jones, an African American woman, were walking on Sutton Street. They were headed to a friend's house on Almy Street when they say a white, four-door car pulled up beside them.
Inside they say there were at least 3 African-American men and a woman who started harassing the couple and made comments about them being a bi-racial couple.
Jones says she talked back to the group, which riled them up even more. The couple was then jumped by the group, and neither of them ended up escaping injury.
Gillooly's ear was split in two with what he describes as an Exacto-knife. He also has deep cuts on his back and was slashed on his chest and stomach. Jones needed stitches on her bicep and had to ice a large bump on her forehead. The perpetrators are still on the loose.

I think the people that did the attacking are pathetic! Get a life of your own and let other people live theirs. I agree, parking violations should take a back seat to this kind of crime.

I agree. Police should be spending more time patrolling and less time writing parking tickets!

Where is the prov police on this? How about less parking enforcement and more law enforcement/patrols? I don't live in the best Providence neighborhood, not the worst either, and hours pass between seeing police patrols drive down a pretty main street.
