Uncompleted West Warwick Riverwalk Vandalized

Bryan Monaghan

The West Warwick Riverwalk Project has been a lightning rod for controversy. Alleged misuse of funds during Phase 1 of the project led to the firing of then Town Manager Wolfgang Bauer - who has since filed a civil suit to get his job back. Now, still uncompleted, the project faces serious funding issues, and recent instances of vandalism.

new West Warwick RIVERWA:K (a/k/a The Pawtuxet River Walkway Project) requires maintenance, security and community input like any recreational or governmental structure. The citizens of the community and nearby neighborhood municipalities, should work together (similar to a Crime Watch scene) along with perhaps forming regional collaborative(s) to look into those items mentioned and funding sources. Rhode island villages are beautiful and we must hold ourselves to such high standards!

As a daily user of the West Warwick and Cranston Bike Paths, it is like night and day crossing from Cranston into West Warwick. Painted graffiti, broken glass, loitering teenagers, and vandalism do not appear until crossing into West Warwick. This news comes as no surprise. West Warwick teens are out of control, and they use the bike path as a way to avoid detection by parents and police. It's secluded in many parts, and there are no community or police patrols which pay it any attention.

...to the rotten kids of the west warwick middle and high schools. I have personally seen groups of kids ripping up freshly planted flowers, drawing on things and trying to break hand rails. Here is a thought, why not have a school club or kids wih detention come and clean up the mess of their peers? Maybe then the kids will respect the walk way.
