When I heard what happened to this mentally ill person in West Warwick where I'm from, I was so upset and the police make me angry. Also, I'm mentally ill with bipolar disorder and last year Coventry police bruised my arms and I didn't do nothing wrong to nobody. I'm now tramatised by the police and if anything happens to me at home I will never call them again. I live alone and I know that's not good. For my opinion all of Rhode Island police officers need to get alot of training.

the west warwick police force has become a joke, they're the laughing stock of this town, which is sad, because there are some really good officers on the force.I personally witnessed 4 of them assault a friend of mine for asking what he was being arrested for, without telling him, they grabbed his wrist and started trying to throw him on the ground, luckily,my buddy tossed them around like a sack a taters, you could see the hatred in their eyes.MY buddy looked bad but their ego's looked ALOT WORSE!!!!

This story is not surprising, I had trouble with a neighbor holding loud obnoxious parties until 3 or 4am and unfortunately the West Warwick officer who responded to my complaints pounded on my door and spoke to me as if I were the troublemaker because he went to school with the girl I was complaining about. She's only 25! Through her door I also heard him tell her when he'd be off duty so he could stop by and visit her later that same night. Now this? I'm really not surprised.

I knew Mark Jackson. He was not a violent person. When spoken to Mark needed time to process what was said Officer Patrick Kelly percieved Mark was not obeying his commands in a manner a ordinary person would. Police need to be trained to deal with mentally changelled people. least 3 people who had the same problem in this state have died by the hand of the police. you are inocent until proven guilty in this country. But Mark was proved quilty and now Mark is in his grave.

I am his relative, and I did not comment that I went to any stores. He was totally self sufficient, just unable to socialize, and did not need a babysitter as you imply. When did it become illegal to sit outside behind your mothers home and smoke a cigarette when it is too hot inside?

Anonymous, I am confused by your comments. You say "i work at one of the stores that mark visited everyday". Then in another you say "I am one of his closest living relatives"...so which is it? Instead of persecuting and referring to the police as murderers, you should remember that they are the ones who are out there every single day risking their own lives to protect you. If they had to use a certain amount of force, then so be it. I hope the police are found to have done any wrongdoing!

If the man was clearly unable to understand simple commands such as take your hands out of your pockets, then he shouldn't be left alone. It is a terrible thing that happened but lets not point the finger at people who risks there lives dealing with people everyday.

Yes, Police sometimes use excessive force. Yes, this person was mentally ill; but, how would a police officer pulling up to a scene know that UNLESS he has had prior contacts with him? Yes, sometimes police officers react too fast; but sometimes police officers don't react quick enough and it ends up costing them their lives.People in RI make me sick. Everyone hates the police, but they would be the first to call at 3 AM when someone breaks into their house.

To antone that can read,5 cops 1 suspect. 1 dead suspect. Enough said. My condolences to the family. I hope his death can help bring about changes in police brutality.

Stop assuming that people that blog don't know the facts. I am one of his closest living relatives, and I still stand by what I said that this was an mentally ill innocent man that was murdered. He was the gentlest man you would ever meet that was so introverted he barely strung three words together. I want awareness raised because anyone could clearly tell that he was mentally ill. We are all in shock and in deep grief and some of these comments are deeply painful and callous.

The poor guy may not have understood the command to take his hands out of his pockets. He was probably so confused by the sudden entrance of the cops that he didn't know what to do. Did anyone see him touch the sign? Police are often too quick to use force. Police often have something to prove...that's why they joined the force.

thats right, the police never over react to situations or use excessive force. it takes 5 of them to take one man down. come on!

I can't believe all that I am reading! First of all, some of you need to go back to school to learn how to spell and have grammar lessons. Secondly, one thing is for sure that I agree on, is that NONE of us was there to witness what REALLY happened. So, instead of speculating, let's just wait till the medical examiner reveals his/her findings, as he may have had serious health issues. So, either he was involved in the vandalism or unfortunately he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I believe that no one can speak until an autopsy report is filed. Unfortunately, you can't always believe those either. I wouldn't point any fingers just yet though. Being in the military I understand that officers must prepare for the worst when they are unsure of what they are up against. On the contrary, after living here for 20 years I have personally witnessed West Warwick Officers clearly disobeying regulations. Although I would like to think they would not purposely injure anyone.

I think people need to hear all the facts before they begin to criticize the police. Were any of you at the incident? No I didn't think so!!

i work at one of the stores that mark visited everyday and i strongly believe he was murdered by those officers friday night. mark was a very posing individual at near 6' 4" and almost three hundred lbs. but the minute you hear him speak you know he is the most friendly and harmless individual. in the last two years i have interacted with mark on a daily basis and never once have seen him raise his voice or lose his temper at anything. he was the most shy and harmless person i've ever met.

Bill C., let the conspiracy theory go!!! All the police fatalies have gone before a grand jury and yes all have come back without a True bill. Why? Becuause unlike you whom slam the police without facts, they know the facts!!!! Anonymous, "They found him guilty of vandalism before they even spoke with him." You weren't there either!!! You have not idea what occurred before the incident or after!! Please, don't be moronic!! The poor mentally ill person can still kill as cop!!!

You people are a disgrace!! Let's hang the cops before the fact come out!! Let's have the sensational media coverage mold our thoughts!! None of you know what truly happened that night and no one feels bad as the cops who the INCIDENT happened too!!! Mentally ill or not, these police officers want to go home at the end of the night to their families. RI should be renamed the home of the monday morning quarterbacks!!!

You are right about the Police not being propperly trained in dealing with the mentally ill...trust me whan I say this, but the Police are not trained very well in many, many other areas as well because all the cities/towns want to do is save money so they first cut Police training...that's the truth!!!! Contact your local police chief and ask them to prove that they are training their officers!!! Don't take their word for it...they all lie to make themselves look good.

I am sure this poor man was a real threat to FIVE highly trained police officers. Someone needs to lose their job and be held responsible. If five cops can kill this man, they could kill anyone of us.

Listen very closely, non of you who wrote so far were there...nor was I. You will learn that he was probably high on some sort of stimulant that lead to his death. I would bet my life that the ME will say "something," either Meth, Coke, or PCP was in his system and he had heart failer because he was fighting; which last time I checked, makes your heart race.........don't assume that the cops were wrong in trying to arrest this person.

I just came back to Rhode Island after a long weekend out of state and heard this story on the radio as I drove into Providence this morning. This is one sick little state. I am pretty sure I'd be "combative" if I was pepper sprayed and beaten by five armed thugs with batons and badges. By my count there were 6 mentally ill men out there that night, unfortunately 5 of them were armed and out of control.

Hey Anonymous, Paranoid? How about the fact that the victims name is released and yet the "Policeman Bill Of Rights"(what a joke) prevents the release of the cops names. I want to know who these people are. Once again, the RI police forces do NOT know how to handle Mental Illness. They prefer to beat up or kill people who are ill. What about the knee to the face? Remember Pawtucket 4 months ago. Stop protecting the cops.

Are you one of the cops that were there or something? This is an mentally ill innocent man that was murdered. They found him guilty of vandalism before they even spoke with him. You are a raving lunatic if you have these comment and have actually read the stories. I hope to God that this is never forgotten.

Your headline makes it sound as though they are guilty of something already. Why doesn't it mention that it is common practice to reassign while the incident is investigated?

Don't worry boys, no RI jury would find you guilty. 2 weeks from now nobody will remember.
