UPDATE Providence Teen on Teen Murder Has Smith Hill Residents On Edge

John Eagan

Days after a local teenager was gunned on the streets of Providence many residents in the Smith Hill neighborhood where it happened are still living in fear.  Residents say they are afraid to walk alone at night, terrified that they might become the next victim.

Jeffrey Lopez, a 19-year old, was gunned down there Monday night.  And even more shocking for some, the people accused of the crime are two 16-year old boys and a 13-year old girl.  Lopez is now the 8th person murdered in the City of Providence this year.

Former Providence Police officer John Reis knows the problem all too well.  He now works with youth from across the state, teaching them how to resolve their issues without turning to violence.

ABC 6 reporter Jennifer Gannon has the story...

This happened across the street from my granddaughter's school. Last month there was a shooting death in the park where we USED to go to the playground. Why would anyone live in Smith Hill if they had a choice? I've been here for over 30 years and have never been afraid until now.
