Governor and Mayor Continue to Spar Over Illegal Immigrant Issue

John Eagan

The battle rages on over Governor Carcieri's executive order on immigration.  And now that the whole thing has gone national, no one is pulling back.

Last week, Governor Carcieri told his side of the story on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor", saying the Providence Police aren't doing enough to report illegal immigrants.

Wednesday morning, Mayor Cicilline got his say, writing a commentary in the Providence Journal under the headline, "Governor, stop blaming illegal aliens".

At the center of the debate is rape suspect Marco Riz, an illegal immigrant accused of raping a woman in Warwick.  The governor blames the mayor, saying Providence Police let Riz slip through the cracks twice after they arrested him.  But the mayor says the governor has the facts wrong.

ABC 6 anchor John Deluca has the latest on this clash of the titans...

I think both Providence PD and ICE let this one slip thru the cracks!! The Mayor should be held responsible as someone from ICE should as well!! The Governor has all the right to come down on the Mayor. He is the Governor and I would think the Mayor should have to answer to this to him..
