Only On ABC 6 - Disturbing Animal Cruelty Caught on Tape

Bryan Monaghan

ABC 6 News has received video of a local residence where the people living there appear to be committing blatant cases of animal cruelty against ducks in their yard. Neighbors of the house now question the safety of their neighborhood, since this information has come to light. A local animal advocate brought the case and video to ABC 6 News in an effort to stop these type of actions.

ABC 6 News Anchor Paul Mueller has more on this story from Providence.

What i REALLY want to know from those of you so concerned wt the ducks safety. Have you ever asked the waitor at your fav resteraunt how the animal was slaughtered and inquired as to if it was humane? Ever eaten veal? Its a baby cow, they slice its neck and let it bleed to death & choke on its own blood. Is that humane? Ever been to a pig roast? And men...when you bought your wifes wedding ring did you ask the jewlery store if it was a blood diamond? Your clothes from sweat shops? DENIAL!!!

All I have to say is that we get our fresh ducks and chicken from the farm and bring it home to kill for food. Thanks F.O.B. "Fresh off the Boat"

Just because you are going to eat an animal that does not give you the legal right or the moral right to kill an animal anyway you see fit. That’s why we have USDA animal inspectors, humane societies, and animal protection laws. People have a right to their feelings and should be able to look out their windows without seeing this kind of activity. This was against the Providence city ordinance, DEM regulations, and may, in fact, violated Rhode Island’s anti-cruelty laws. It’s a public nuisance

You go Dennis! It's one thing to raise farm animals to feed your family, it's totally another when you treat them inhumanely, making them suffer while killing them. It's also illegal for these morons to keep the ducks in their yard.

Dont judge them base on your ignorance!!! Of course they obtain the ducks legally. It was purchase from a local farm. Not taken from parks. FYI, they don't keep ducks in their backyard, they probably bought it that day due to some celebration. Its not animal cruelty if its for food. Everyone's making a big deal out of nothing! There are bigger issue we need to address, like gettin the soldiers home!

They were Easter gifts some RI reject gave their kids. These people are the cruel people. Do you know what happens to them in the winter? If they are near the water their feet get frost bit, these ducks do not migrate as Mallards. The people who were slaughtering the ducks are probably done cleaner than the slaughter house that employs illegal

I would like to see law enforcement look at this video before it makes the newscast, this is a news story without the investigation in place- This does not actually help the animals, what would be helpful is when there is animal cruelty situations and charges and convictions take place, the news actually covers that. Cruelty to animals is a serious issue, the public should NOT be sheltered; show the video. People need to see the reality of the situation.

Check the Providence Journal/Evening Bulletin Jun 3, 2006, it concerns a pipe bomb that was used by a person living at 11-13 Richter street, who belongs to a Laotian gang. A lady lost her eye from that pipe bomb. Killing ducks in a humane fashion is not a priority with these people that live at that house. So those of you defending these people have myopic vision.

You don't move into a neighborhood to live next door to a slaughterhouse. People that don't live here should not put a spin on this so it sounds like people are just feeding their families. It’s not that simple. Did they obtain these ducks legally or were they taken from a park? The city of Providence does not legally allow people to have fowl on their properties. City ordinances and RI Fish and Wildlife regulations are in question. It was cruel to the ducks and to the neighbors.

Any way we can charge Gov. Carcieri with cruelty to humans? I think this what we should all worry about as he is running this state into the ground and claiming he's saving tax payers money but in essence what he's really doing is cutting programs from the most needy behind a cloud with his "Eat and Heat" smokescreen that most people won't qualify for. You see the if you can't qualify for food stamps, you wont qualify for Heat assistance. This is the real cruelty going on in this state.

Saturday, Sep 20 at 11:21 AM Mark, Riverside wrote ...

Do we actually know that this is illegal? Many people raise chickens and eat them but what I have a concern with is whether it's sanitary as people live right next door. I would doubt that it would be legal to slaughter a duck in a residential neighborhood so if this is the case they should be fined but not charged with cruelty. We see "Duck" on many menus here in this area, should we arrest them with cruelty? It's a question of legality of "were the ducks slaughtered for food legally". Be fair

Slaughtering animals for meat is not abuse or cruelty, and we can expect to see a lot more of this as prices skyrocket and public assistance is cut back. People will do what they must to feed their children at a time when Rhode Island's unemployment rate is second only to Michegan out of 52 states.

That house where this happened has a history. A gang member was arrested for using a pipe bomb in which a lady lost her eye. You can find that story in the Providence Journal. For those of you sticking up for these people, there is more to come on this story that you will not be able to defend. Families that have lived in that neighborhood for years should not have to live in fear. This was not about preparing a meal. There are already investigations going on by different agencies.

As a chef I would rather have a freshly killed animal by my own hands. My grandfather would cut the heads off of fresh chicken and I have never tasted such a great piece of chicken. There is no way that an animal won't suffer from being slaughtered. When I go fishing and clean the fish while it is still alive should I fear being arrested for cruelty to fish? What is this world coming to when we can't slaughter our own food for a fresh dinner. Sarah Palin is an avid hunter and seal killer.

Thank you Paul Mueller for helping those who had no voice. Animal cruelty is when you abuse, hurt or leave an animal for dead. But when you kill them to feed your family it's no sin in God's eyes, the U.S.is no exception, let's be realistic and respect different cultures there are more serious issues to focus on then to worry about how people prepare there next meal.

If people seriously want to make a big deal outta this, they should stop eating meat and become vegetarians. All of the people who are saying ohh how cruel! are all hypocrits! Just shut up and move on. There are a lot more important things to worry about than people killing ducks to feed their family. No wonder America has so many problems because nobody wants to mind their own business. Even more annoying is the news people over exaggerating! Pathetic! Not everyone has $ to buy the "good" food.

This is really stupid for the news to make such a big deal out of killing ducks. I know exactly what they are doing in the backyards. I grew up with my parents doing the same thing-they do it to feed ME! They don't do it for the fun and enjoyment. Is it really a difference when the ducks are being killed in the backyard instead of a farm? Those nosy neighbors need to mind their business, because that is how drama starts! Maybe you should take a look at slaughter houses!!

Cruelty implys that the act is intended to cause suffering. It looks to me that these animals were slaughtered for food purposes. Certainly, if there is an ordinance against slaughtering animals for food, then they should be cited for an infraction. In my many travels to Asia, I can tell you that this seems to fall in category of "preparing for lunch". Is this really much different than boiling your lobster alive? This seems to be a cultural ignorance issue, and perhaps a city ordinance violation

I come from a family where it is tradition to slaughter a pig every fall and share the "bounty" with every family member. So a scene where animals are killed for food does not desturb me. What does is the method the animals were killed. I understand what these people were doing, but I think they should have brought the animals to a person who could humainly slaughter the ducks legaly. Or, just buy their animals freshly slaughtered like my family does.

I am a volunteer on a national level, in the sometimes "ugly, abusive world of animal rescue". To hear that this abuse and cruelty was going on in my own state sickened me. Thank god for the person who "blew the whistle" on this heinous act. Since they live in the city, aren't there ordinances that exist to disallow keeping ducks in your yard to begin with? The need to prosecute is fully in order, but in RI, our penalties for abuse is too weak, like a slap on the wrist.
