Brown Students Look to Ban Columbus Day on Campus

John Eagan

Columbus Day has been a federal holiday in the U.S. since 1934, honoring Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer credited with discovering America.

But some people feel Columbus Day celebrates genocide, rape, and torture, and they want it taken off of the calendar.

ABC 6 reporter Parker Gavigan was at Brown University Tuesday as students united to ban the holiday from their campus by 2009...

UM if they are at Brown dont they have better things to do like study for a real career rather then worry about something that has NOTHING to do with today? and i sure all thoses people really appreciated having columbus day off from school when they were younger and now ;) haha so honestly I think they should find something better to do.

One of these days, we all must acknowledge, respect, and give assistance to the wisdom of all original peoples on all lands. Until then, the human condition will continue to consume all gifts of Life. May we change before too late or we will find out that none of us can eat the "notion of greed and money".

Thank you for your thoughtful reporting on this issue. It's time we started wanting annd honoring accuracy in our history rather than deriding or diminishing those that ask for it.

I respect their stand on this, but I'll have to disagree on the ban. History shows that we have progressed a great deal in the last 500 years as a society and we have come a long way from the barbaric practices this country once performed. But you can look at any culture (society) and find violence and atrocities at some point in its development. We are not always proud of our individual choices and sometimes we are ignorant of them, but we should consider what was going on at the time.

What Do You Think of the State's New Ability to Track Illegal Immigrants?

  • I Like it, illegal immigrants are finding work easily while I rot in line at the unemployment office
  • Bad Idea, These people are taking sub-minimum wage jobs anyway and actual citizens are getting snared in this E-Verify system
