UPDATE: Police Nab Providence Hit and Run Suspect; Victim ID'd

John Eagan

The police now have a suspect after a hit and run Sunday night near the corner of Manton Avenue and Unit Street in Providence.

Providence Police say 67-year old Juan Aguirre hit a female pedestrian with his car and then fled the scene.  Police spent hours searching for the suspect Sunday night into Monday morning.  But it wasn't until they received a tip from a viewer watching the local news when they were led right to Aguirre's front door.

The viewer told police that they saw the suspect's damaged car parked outside of his apartment on Brooke Street in North Providence.

So far, police have not yet been able to identify the victim because of the extent of her injuries.  She is described as a black female anywhere from 16-22 years old, who was wearing a black fleece zip up, blue jeans and pink sneakers.  She is now fighting for her life at Rhode Island Hospital.

ABC 6 reporter Malini Basu has the latest...

UPDATE: Providence Police tell ABC6 news that they have identified the victim.  They are withholding her name, however, because she is a minor.

my healing and loving thoughts are with the little girl. she is close to my childs age & i know her family is suffering as i would be in the same situation. may peace be with them. ------------------------------------------------- the offender should not be out of jail on bail. he has no respect for human life. why should he be allowed to hurt anyone else. HIS FAMILY SHOULD COMMIT HIM TO BUTLER SINCE HE IS AN OBVIOUS DANGER TO OTHERS! wake up people!

Give this person life in prison. It is a shame we can't punish the criminals in this state. If we could 250,000 of you would be in jail and a we would have a decrease of births of criminals at least for a few years.

what did this guy think he hit a squirrel? how can you run down a PERSON and then drive away? everyone is in such a hurry these days...they are driving while on the phone or eating....then they are ticked off when the police stop them....I pray that the police and the public find this poor girls family so she doesn't suffer alone in the hospital....

What Do You Think of the State's New Ability to Track Illegal Immigrants?

  • I Like it, illegal immigrants are finding work easily while I rot in line at the unemployment office
  • Bad Idea, These people are taking sub-minimum wage jobs anyway and actual citizens are getting snared in this E-Verify system
