Chris Boardman

Pawtucket is taking funds from the economic stimulus package and putting them toward a skate park. ABC6 Reporter Erica Ricci finds out why...

first off i agree with both sides, while Pawtucket does need their roads and bridges tended to i think the crime rate is a little more of a problem kids are committing crimes because they have nothing else to do or to hold onto but gives them a place to go and get away from the crime and now they aren't getting themselves into trouble. I'm twenty years old, I am a skateboarder, we need places to call our own. team sports get these places but these kids can't? where's the equality in that? 4W1L!

Skateparks do not promote "wholesome fun". Usually they are another gateway for violence between the skateboarding and bmx communities. But this will aid in less crowding of other RI parks.

i dont know if you have ever been to north providence skate park or have seen other skateboarders on the street, but skateboarding is a brother hood you dont have to know eatch other i dont know a lot of the people i have skated with but out goal is not to distroy things or be "bad kids" we just want to skate and have fun and get better so we kind of act like a team giving pointers and help people get there tricks and get better. and it dosnt even matter if we dont know eatch other

Mike P...when is the last time you went to a baskeball court in Pawtucket and saw them playing basketball? maybe a couple of kids? so we keep building arenas for kids to meet and not do anything productive? There needs to be a stronger emphasis on getting kids together with team sports or channel their energy in a more creative individual fashion. I was mis-understood on my last messege. I did not say only dilinquent kids skateboard but do you think non-dilinquent kids would not face trouble?

A Community Development Block Grant can't be used to fix potholes or pay teachers. Pawtucket is getting other stimulus money for schools, housing, infrastructure, etc.; this half million is *for* this purpose. As for a skate park being a place for "deliquent kids" to hang out, if the existing basektball courts aren't a problem, I don't see how a skate park would be, either.

Untill team sports in Pawtucket rampid with the politics of favoritism asserted by adults bent on winning "only" and our young people who are not stuppid stop figuireing this there will be a need to support individulised sports. One of the most popular being skateboarding. Other comunities such as Coventry,No. Providence,Johnston, and Cumberland have figured this out as did Pawtucket long before the present crisis. If this puts people to work,$'s into the economy, kids off the streets Why not

i think that i should have a place that i am allowed to skateboard without being hassled and being called a bad kid and building a skatepark will end up cleaning the streets in the long run be cause if you ever see a ledge or a high curb and its black and smooth its from wax that a skateboarder put there to help the board slide so if we had a place to skateboard then we wouldnt put the wax there so it is cleaning the streets in a way so i think if we cant have a skatepark skating should b legal

All a skating park will do is give the delinquent kids a place to congregate. The intention if for a place to go, do you think the "good" kid will be able to go without facing trouble. This should be put to the voters, we do live in a Democratic Society, NO?

I know they've been wanting to build a skate park for a while, but now? And using the stimulus money? That's a complete waste of the money, I don't know what Doyle and the rest are thinking. Put money into our roads and bridges, or our schools and teachers. Maybe to help pay for maintenance of Slater Park. But a skate park? No thanks.
