They are hateful, yes, but this could have a positive effect in the end. The mainstream church has always been biggoted, targeted minorities, gays. Now they're the ones being targeted, it's their own loved ones that they're told will burn in hell, and they don't like it one bit. Now it hurts, cause now it's personal. The churches didn't say one word when WBC was damning homosexuals or Jews, but now that their own loved ones are being targeted they speak up. Maybe now they'll understand. Peace

I should point out that I was talking about the Phelps clan that makes me sick. I just notice I didn't specify who I was talking about. But again, these people are heartless and know nothing about the bible or religion! They TWIST every word and make it hateful. I hope THEY burn in hell.

Your sensationalist coverage is misguided. The "story" here is not the miscreants from Kansas, it's the high school kids, straight and gay, who've come together to stand firm against hatred and discrimination. Instead, you give more than twice the air time to WBC folks and their incendiary signs as to the students of EPHS. The real story here is our kids rallying to stand by one another *against* bigotry and vitriol. Why you spent most of the story *showing* the bigotry and hatred is puzzling.

These people make me sick!!! Rhode Island - no, forget that, AMERICA should ban them from the country. What THEY do is wrong. Do any of these people have a job? Why do they worry so much about other people. THEY NEED TO LIVE THEIR OWN LIVES!

to Melaragno, it may please you a little bit to know that the Phelps family has been banned from entering the U.K. for fostering hateful practice in public. The U.S. is always just a few steps short of England, but we'll catch up soon enough.

I believe that everyone and anyone who loves this country should take a stand against the Phelps crew, not just gays and gay supporters. Someone should seriously consider infiltrating this group and documenting their practices(flag burning, funeral disruptions, etc.) To Arthur, who made that snooty response to Nancy Green, you are the naive one, as the 1st amendment does not protect intentional verbal provocation of violence, or "fighting words." It certainly does not protect flag desicration.

Oh God, not these Phelps people again. Way to go EP students, thanks for being there for the gay community. Westboro is one of the most hateful groups there is. Don't they know they have no stand? Get them out of the country. By the way, Kansas (where these people come from) is not in the midwest, it's a central state.

The Westboro baptist church people are no different from Hitler and his Nazi's. They hide behind a mask of rightiousness when they are just psychotic people looking to spread misery and hatred for their brothers and sisters. Kudos to the East providence students and anyone else who will stande up against these people.

I don't think that the people of the Westboro Baptist church have read the bible or understand the message of Christ. Let's all pray for their sins and hope that the world can learn to love each other in a way that brings happiness to everyone. No one can claim to know what God wants but I am willing to bet that the people of the Westboro Baptist church don't have the answer.

Jesus said Go and sin no more. Clean your closet before you come out. You learn a good life style not do what ever you feel.

Thank you to the Patriot Guard Riders who will be at the Garden of Heroes not to counter protest the phelps crew but to stand in honor and support of the Gold Star families. This is about honoring their loved one not the Phelps group so lets stand for our fallen and support the families -

I feel so sad for the people of the Westboro Baptist church who are taking such steps backwards with their vile and disrespectful manner. However, i agree with many on this comment thread that I am proud of the young adults of EP high and Rhode Island who are taking huge strides in supporting their fellow classmates and the gay community, accepting everyone for who they are.

I believe that what both sides of the protesters were fighting for is just another example of life. You can't live within a world without a balance.

I AM SO PROUD OF ALL OF OUR EP STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS.THEIR POISE AND MATURITY SHOWS JUST HOW WELL WE AS PARENTS HAVE DONE OUR JOB IN TEACHING BOTH LOVE AND TOLERENCE FOR EACH OTHER.GOD DOES NOT HATE THAT WHICH HE HAS MADE.I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT CHURCH PEOPLE KNEW THAT MUCH.

You are very naive, the rest of the US has a lot of money. The north east especially southern New England is poor. I think the people of RI better learn that very quickly before the state gets into dire financial straits. For the people who came in from Kansas. I am glad the US has the first amendment to let everyone be heard.

It's funny cause I thought GOD loved everyone. And isn't it in the Bible somewhere "Judge not less thee be judged 10 fold". My life and how I lived it will end with me and my god not anyone else. It also sickens me that this group will protest a soldiers funeral, someone who fought and died for this country, Where are they? Fighting a lost cause.. In the end they will meet their maker and will be judged according.

I'm a student at EPHS and I am proud of my fellow students. They took a stand and didn't let down. I can only hope this will better our school and bring us closer together.

Someone needs to investigate how this gang can afford to spend all their time traveling around the country disrupting funerals and spewing hate. Where do they get their money? And how much do they owe?

I'm proud of our students at EPHS. Westboro Baptist Church should use a different name because they are not what other "Baptists" are. Please don't judge all baptists because of what one church believes.

Who ARE these freaks using religion as a platform to spread their messages of hate? Many forms of organized religion rule with fear, condeming anyone who dares to think or act differently from their "herd". This group of disturbed individuals should crawl back under whatever rocks they came from and leave the well adjusted kids from the next generation ALONE!

I am proud of the students of East Providence high school for standing up for themselves and their fellow classmates. I was outraged when I saw the ignorant remarks of the radical church group's protest. Love will always prevail over hate.

THIS IS WHAT I CALL A 'GOOD NEWS' STORY, IN THAT OUR WONDERFUL EAST PROVIDENCE HIGH STUDENTS SHOWED THAT THEY CAN STATE THEIR OPINIONS AND ACT IN A MATURE FASHION WITHOUT HATE/CURSE WORDS, UNLIKE THE SENSASTIONALIZING SIGNS AND WORDS OF THE GROUP THAT WAS FROM OUT OF OUR STATE. CONGRATULATIONS STUDENTS!
