Central Falls Police Collecting on Past Due Tickets and Fines

Bryan Monaghan

Members of the Central Falls Police spent their Friday evening and night going door to door, collecting fines due to the City, and arresting those with outstanding warrants and tickets. Not everyone who was visited Friday was expecting the police to come calling, but in this economy, cities and towns will do anything necessary to collect some cash.

ABC 6 News Reporter Malini Basu has the story.

THE ADD SAYS ARRESTED.. AND COLLECTING FINES OWED... IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE THE $$ THAN OBVIOUSLY THE ONES ARRESTED DID SPEND THE NIGHT IN JAIL... WASTING MORE CITY/STATE MONEY. I DOUBT THIS IS GOING TO SOLVE THE MONEY PROBLEMS, OR RESOLVE MONIES OWED TO CITY/STATE. NOT TO MENTION HOW MUCH DID IT COST FOR THE PATROL OFFICERS THAT NIGHT/EVENING?

A warning? You want police to send a letter that says "remember that ticket you got and didn't pay? you remember how on the back of the ticket it said that if you didn't pay or go to court to contest it that an arrest warrant would be issued? Guess what? It actually happened! We will be going door-to-door throughout the town on 6-20-09 to arrest people who haven't paid. Thanks." And tough financial crimes are irrelavant. Don't do the crime with you can't do the time (fine).

Don't you know that the city has a lot of extra cash to sent not one, but TWO officers out to collect a debt. Lets compare the cost of a ticket to the cost of sending these officers out. Are they doing it as overtime?

Wow! This is messed up. What will arresting these people solve? They will still own the city/state money if they go to jail. What is it a few days or months, after that now what, huh? Go to them with warning, because sending or calling notice won't work then if they don't pay up then jail

Hello??? If you got the ticket, pay the ticket - all of you claim that the PD collecting tickets in this tough time is ridiculous, If someone owed you money, wouldnt you want it? Especially if YOU were in tough financial times...

Cherie, actually none of those arrested were held or put through our state court system because they are only unpaid fines. So therefore no state money was wasted. However, the roundup did save the homeowners of Central Falls from possible increased taxes. Plus I've gotten a ticked before, the warnings are right on the ticket. Try it in providence and watch your car get booted. Give me a break people.

Its about time. Every police department should be doing this (do this). Cherie and mt, they had multiple warnings. The ticket that they got with the option to pay or go to court was warning 1. When they no showed in court and didn't pay and the arrest warrant was issued war warning 2. Hell, if the state troopers did this we'd close our budget defict in less than a week.

It is actually standard procedure to eventually make an arrest in the case of outstanding fees or fines that are overdue. What is unusual and probably inappropriate is the Central Falls' department's seemingly arbitrary enforcement of the law; if they were willing to launch this 'crackdown', one has to speculate as to the reasons that they let all of these fines go unpaid so long. I think Cherie is correct, that in good faith the department should have sent a warning.

The officer stated these individuals may have forgotten they had tickets or the economy may have affected their ability to pay. In response officers went door to door arresting citizens (in one of the poorest communities) for non-payment. Is this a community response? Wouldn’t it had been better to send a warning of the police department’s intent before costing the State more money for housing these individuals and putting them through the court system, and away from their families and jobs.
