Witnesses Sought; Murdered Bystander Threw Candy at Alleged Shooter

New photos have been made available from the New Bedford Petro Mart fatal shooting, including shots of possible witnesses to the incident. The Bristol County D.A.'s office released the following statement:

...These two witnesses have yet to come forward and we are seeking to speak with them about the incident.

On Saturday, June 20, 2009, shortly after 8:30 p.m., a light-skinned Hispanic male entered the Petro-Mart on Coggeshall Street in New Bedford.  During an attempted armed robbery at the store, the suspect shot John K. Martin, 32, of 41 Mitchell St., New Bedford.  He died Sunday around 8 p.m. at Rhode Island Hospital.

The investigation into the homicide is being coordinated by Assistant District Attorney Aaron Strojny.  Detectives from New Bedford Police and the State Police Unit assigned to this office are working collaboratively to identify, locate and apprehend the suspect.

Law Enforcement is urging the public to review these photos and to contact us with any information regarding the incident, the suspect’s identity or the two witnesses’ identities.

The suspect is described as being a light-skinned Hispanic male. He was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, had a thin mustache and a pronounced nose.  He is in his late teens or 20s, and is described as being between 5 feet 11 inches tall and 6 feet 2 inches tall.  He was last seen running north on Mitchell Street into a wooded area inside Riverside Park.

The New Bedford Police need the public's help locating a man suspected in a Saturday night shooting.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, an innocent bystander was shot during an attempted robbery at the Petro Mart at 171 Coggeshall Street between 8:30 and 9pm.  The victim, a 32 year-old New Bedford man, is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

The suspect is a light-skinned Hispanic male in his late teens or early 20s, between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 3 inches tall.  He has a pronounced nose and a thin mustache.

Anyone who was in the area of the incident or may know the suspect's identity is urged to please contact the Detective Division at New Bedford Police at 508-991-6300.  Citizens can also give an anonymous tip by calling New Bedford Police's tip-line at 508-99-CRIME.

ABC 6 News has learned that the victim, John K. Martin died of his injuries Sunday night. New Bedford Police ask anyone who may have any information to please step forward.
