CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - The city of Cranston has agreed to pay a $1,000 fine for violating Rhode Island's open records law.
The penalty resolves a lawsuit brought by the attorney general's office on behalf of a Cranston man, John Bina, whose requests for public documents went unanswered by the city.
The $1,000 fine is the maximum allowable under state law for a public records violation.
Attorney General Patrick Lynch says the city's disregard for the public records law was knowing and willful.
Cranston City Solicitor Anthony Cipriano said the violations occurred under a prior administration. He said the city agreed to the fine because the allegations would have been tough to defend.
