N. Smithfield Carjacking a Hoax

Chris Boardman

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - Police in North Smithfield say a man made up a bogus story about being carjacked.

Seth Desjarlais told police he was held up at gunpoint Tuesday night and forced to abandon his car on a Route 146 off-ramp.

But Police Chief Steven Reynolds says further investigation revealed holes in Desjarlais's report. He also says parts of the car were found at the auto body shop where Desjarlais worked.

Police have charged Desjarlais with misdemeanor offenses of filing a false police report. He was being arraigned Thursday. Reynolds said police are looking into another "person of interest" believed to have helped Desjarlais.

It's not immediately known who is representing Desjarlais. A phone listing for Desjarlais could not be immediately found.

when i heard this story on the news it sounded off~~ the location where the carjacking supposedly occurred is very unpopulated, it just didn't make sense for somebody to wait at the bottom of that ramp to carjack somebody.

Why would anyone do that? Is it for attention? I don't get it. Did he lose something and had to come up with some type of "good" excuse as to why he doesn't have it anymore? I don't get it.
