RI Rep. Accused of DUI Pleads No Contest

Chris Boardman

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island legislator has pleaded no contest to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Rep. Raymond Sullivan, a Coventry Democrat who managed Barack Obama's presidential campaign in the state, entered the plea Thursday midway through his trial in Kent County District Court.

The plea came after the judge agreed that the results of his breathalzyer test could be used at trial.

The Providence Journal reports that Sullivan must surrender his driver's license for three months, pay a $500 fine and perform 20 hours of community service.

The 32-year-old Sullivan said he wanted to accept responsibility and move on.

State Police say they stopped Sullivan on Interstate 95 after seeing his Ford Explorer swerve several times. They say he slurred his speech and could not correctly recite the alphabet.

Want to bet the outcome may have been different 25 or 30 years ago? Listen to you whiners. A state rep (and the Presidents RI campaign manager)gets pulled over by a RI State Trooper, gets arrested, uses the due process afforded to us all, takes a plea and gets the minimum (as many do)sanctions as outlined by law. This is NOT a case of "the fix is on" at all here.

If he wanted to accept responsibility then he would have plead guilty long before this went to trial and wasted taxpayer $$. Only after his attorney could not get the .17 ommitted from evidence did he decide this. Also only 3 months??? Isn't it a mandatory 6 months? and only $500 in fines...ladies and gentlemen the FIX is ONCE AGAIN IN!!!!! I wonder where he will stand on the drunk driving policy here in RI in the future?? VOTE HIM OUT!!!!!

Why is there only a 3 month suspension? If the penalty was a LIFETIME loss of a license there would certainly be less offenses and many more innocent people still alive.
