David Swain Found Guilty of Killing Wife

Chris Boardman

TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands (AP) - A jury in the British Virgin Islands has found a Rhode Island man guilty of murder after his wife drowned during a 1999 scuba-diving trip.

A judge expects to soon sentence David Swain. He would be sent to a Tortola prison where he has been held for about two years.

Prosecutors had accused Swain of killing his wife to pursue another woman. Experts had testified that they believe he attacked his wife from behind, tore off her mask and shut off her air supply.

The defense had said a poorly done autopsy report could not rule out medical reasons for Shelley Tyre's death, such as a heart attack during what they say was an accidental drowning.

Jurors announced the verdict Tuesday after a four-hour deliberation.
