Parents Push For Early Vaccine For Fragile Kids

Bryan Monaghan

Looking at the current schedule of H1N1 clinics in Rhode Island schools, some parents are pushing to get their kids vaccinated sooner than their scheduled time. These parents have children who have medical conditions that make them more fragile when in comes to infection.

ABC 6 News Reporter Erica Ricci speaks to one such parent.

I agree with Alan. I have 2 children with medical issues, they won't get vaccinated until the end of November, but I feel they aren't more "at risk" than any other child. Healthy children have died from complications of this virus. It's not picking or choosing.

I have a 4 1/2 year old so even after the first vaccine she won't be 100% protected. She would have to wait one month for the second vaccine. By then she could be very sick. I think the 0-9 age group should have been first as they need 2 doses to be protected.

I think roger needs to check his facts. all of the schools have been identified and clinics have been scheduled. Over 1100 VOLUNTEER vaccinators have been trained. and I believe this is the best way to FAIRLY distribute the vaccine. I feel for parents with sick children however lets not forget that the children who have died have NO underlying illness. so ALL children are in danger.

RI had 9 months to plan and be ready to vaccinate. After the vaccinations arrive they had yet to identify all the grade schools in the state, train the volunteers for clinics, or have a plan on how to fairly distribute vaccine to the different communities. THE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER IS FULL OF LOSERS!

I already called the RI dept. of heath about this. I have a son with a serious medical condition and I am very frustrated by the way the state has handled this issue. While all children are at risk with h1n1, those with other conditions are always at greater risk.
