Board of private RI jail cuts costs by about half

AP

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - The board that oversees the Donald W.
Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls has cut spending on
legal, accounting and consulting by about half since federal
detainees were pulled from the jail.

Spokesman Bill Fischer says the board had spent about $435,000
through Nov. 18. The board approved almost $887,000 in expenditures
last year.

Board members followed through on a promise last winter to
drastically reduce costs following a decision by U.S. Immigration
and Customs Enforcement to remove about 150 federal detainees from
the jail.

The removal of the detainees was in response to the death of a
man facing immigration charges.

The loss of the detainees cost the privately run jail about
$100,000 a week.
