New gay rights group brings message to RI leaders

AP

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A new gay rights group in Rhode Island
hopes to bring its message directly to politicians in a state where
the gay marriage movement has stalled.

Queer Action of Rhode Island met with Republican Gov. Don
Carcieri this month to express its frustration with
his opposition to gay marriage and his veto of legislation allowing
gay couples to plan the funerals of their late partners.

Afterward, the governor said he would consider creating a
domestic partnership system similar to that expanded by voters in
Washington state.

Queer Action founder and member Susan Heroux said she wouldn't
support a system less than marriage but considers Carcieri's change
in tone a victory. Her group wants to push for tougher hate crime
protections and meet with its opponents in the General Assembly.
