RI Lawmakers Look to Tighten Concussion Rules for High School Athletes

Chris Boardman

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island lawmakers are considering new rules that would change the way high school athletes are treated for head injuries.

A bill introduced by Democratic state Rep. Raymond Gallison would require any student-athlete who gets hit in the head to receive written clearance from a licensed health care professional with training in treating concussions before resuming play.

The Bristol Democrat's legislation would require any athlete suspected of sustaining a blow to the head to sit out a game or practice and stay out of play until he or she has received medical clearance.

The Providence Journal also calls on school districts to educate youth, coaches and parents about the implications of head injuries.

Any hit to the head? That's just rediculous. You wouldn't be able to field a football team after the first practice. I understand that we have to protect the kids but this is too far. We have to educate coaches, parents and players to recognize concussion and be sure that is treated properly.

The law should be expanded to include all youth sports programs, but the hard part will be enforcing these laws. Who will be in charge to decide whether something was an applicable hit?
