Back in the late 70s, there was a poster that seemed to be everywhere I went. It was a picture of a completely burned out house and had a caption:"Good night, Mommy and Daddy. I love you." I saw this poster on a float, in a fireman's parade, and shortly before this, I lost my 13 year old Daughter in a house fire. Believe me when I say that *nobody* can understand the hurt and void in life that this can cause. Even the best intentioned folks can *ever* know how the parents feel. They can *imagine* how, but they can't feel the depths of sorrow and dispair just in the same way. Stay close to your friends that suffered this loss and give them all the support you can. Later, they'll thank you. My prayers are with the folks that passed on and their families. God Bless and Godspeed.

They didn't say there weren't any detectors in the house, they said there weren't any WORKING detectors. Smoke detectors need to be replaced at least once every 10 years - they lose their effectiveness as they age. It's entirely possible they had detectors in the house and that when periodically tested seemed fine but because of their age, the alarm did not end up going off in time. This family has suffered a horrific loss, please don't start pointing fingers at them saying what they should have done - we don't know all the facts and this could happen to anyone. Please take the time now to check both the batteries as well as the manufacture date on your detectors!

Please, CHECK YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS! How many people have to die because of DEAD BATTERIES??? Do it RIGHT NOW -- protect your families.

There is no need to place blame (especially a landlord) it's very possible that they may have disconnected them as many people do. Focus should be that these people are gone and family members and friends are hurting at this time.

It is a one family home where the parents went away for the weekend. The parents are mourning for the loss and also to think it could have been avoided by having working smoke detectors

I cannot find the words to accurately describe the depth of my heartbreak and prayers for this poor family. Please rememeber not to take one day you have with your loved ones (parents, children, siblings, friends, etc.) and hug them and tell them how much you love them. It can all end so quickly and tragically........

Have you ever thought that that poster may have said something because they may have lost some one in the station fire? unfortunately land lords in this state still have not learned and do not comply with fire codes. my heart goes out to those families who lost loved ones. how ever you have to wonder if this could have been prevented.

My thoughts go to the family's of those who died. How ever one thing bothers me will their be a investigation to the home owner on why there was no smoke detectors in the home? that's up to the landlord to install them. I hope they dont let it go.
