Second Chance
After surviving against all odds – abandoned pup looking for home Smithfield, RI, February 8, 2010: On a cold, sleeting morning in late December, an American Staffordshire Terrier mix, showed up at the back entrance of a business - covered in blood. He was so skinny you could count his ribs and the notches on his spinal cord. Shivering and likely in shock, he was huddled in the corner, simply looking for some help.
Through the kindness of employees, Smithfield Animal Control Warden Thomas Taylor, and Dr. Floyd Graham of Greenville Animal Hospital, the dog received immediate help. It appeared that he had been abandoned for many weeks and hit by a car. Severely underweight, he surprisingly had no broken bones, but had several deep cuts on his face, side and belly.
It was determined he was about 1.5 years old. All surmised that this was one lucky little boy, so he was affectionately named "Chance".
Today, Chance is a completely different pup. He has put on weight, his scars have healed thanks to the diligence and care of the Smithfield Animal Control Officers (ACO’s), and he has reclaimed his sweetness and spirit. Chance adores the ACO’s, clearly grateful for their continuous attention in helping his wounds to heal. A bit cautious with strangers, the moment you get him outside, he quickly bonds asking for affection and willing to give it back.

It's wonderful to see the puppy come out in this very lucky 1.5 year old. What Chance needs now is a loving and caring home. Chance is hoping someone wishing for a new best friend will come forward by March 1, the date he will be cleared to go to his new home. He should have the opportunity to always feel the warmth of a home, have food in his belly, and enjoy the love and companionship that he so deserves. Chance’s temperament test concludes that a good home would be one without an indoor cat, where Chance would be the only dog and with someone willing to continue his training. Chance is very intelligent and already knows some basic commands, but will need a little work with his potty training once adopted into a home.
If you're looking for a dog that will likely provide you with undying devotion -- please look no further. The shelter is located at 3 Spragueville Road, Smithfield, behind the Smithfield Department of Public Works building. The shelter is open seven (7) days a week: Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. A thirty dollar ($30.00) refundable deposit is required. Rabies vaccination required within fourteen (14) days of adoption, neuter within (30) days, per state law.
