Just a few minutes earlier Jody was partaking in showing off in his car at the Applebee's parking lot, where he did a burnout and then got on to the road to engage in a race with another vehicle. This was not an accident of two innocent parties.

first of all jody hawkins is my brother, and ive talked to him alot about this.you people can all put blame on anyone you can, but the fact is there was alot more to it. as many of you dont know or havent heard or dont want to believe, there was marijuana at the scene, and jody tested negative to drugs or alcohol.so you people should really think about what you say before you say it.it is a very bad tragedy that happened, but it did and noone can change that. my heart goes out to his family.

R.I.P we will all miss you<3

"Patty" I know this is an open forum. But anybody with any kid of compassion would of read about Jesse, and minded their own business. I would of never lowered myself to make someones family have to read disrespectful thoughts. If you really were being "adult" about this you would of had compassion for any family who has gone through this and not put your opinion for them to read. They are suffering enough. Save your 2 cents for town related things in Newport, that's where they really need you.

Guess what, if jesse was over the white line, and the driver had the headlights on, don't you think they would have seen him?!

I know both Jody and the passenger in Jody's car. Neither has been able to sleep and yes, they will live with this the rest of their lives. And no, neither saw Jesse, it was a dark road, no lights and Jesse was in dark clothing.

Don't worry this will be my last post. But, I have to respond to this sentence, "It's kind of funny how people always have an opinion about something they are not even part of." Must be an interesting conversation around the table at night if you only discuss the things that impact you directly. Anyway, I'm not looking to harass teenagers who lost a friend -only to ask the questions that perhaps you'll be asking once you get over the grief. Sorry about your loss.

This goes out to Patty Elston who obviouslly has nothing better to do than harrass a bunch of kids who have lost a close friend. It's kind of funny how people always have an opinion about something they are not even part of. As far as what we should or shouldn't know as adults is pointless. You should really step back for a min and grow up. You type a bunch of nasty comments on a website when you know you would never say this to any of our faces.

i met jesse a couple of times through family. the short time that i spent around him was long enough to see what a genuinely nice person he was. it is truly a tradgey. i can understand why people say it was dumb to be riding a board on a busy road in the dark, but think back to when you were 17. i know you can all think of something dumb that you did. as for his parents, there is no way you can keep your eye on a 17 year old every second. my heart goes out to all who knew him. RIP sweetheart.

Mrs. Burgess, This is not a memorial page, it is a news website. If your intention is to have a website or blog dedicated to the memory of Jesse, I suggest you and all his friends create one. This is an open forum for opinions and as an adult you should know that.

Sad story but why are so many kids on skatebaords in the streets these days? Where are the fathers of these kids? How about fathers taking these kids fishing or on hiking trails and getting INOLVED in their kids lives. OOPS! There I go being logical again.

I am the mother of one of Jesse's friends and reading all of these comments of people putting comments on here other than Jesse's friends is sad. You have a right to your opinion, but at this point and time, keep it to yourself and leave this page for his friends to remember him and his family. I met Jesse a few times and he make a big impact on my life. We truly lost a wonderful person and my thoughts and prayers go out to his whole family. God Bless you, Jesse was a doll. He will be missed.

Jesse was a great person, and he's going to be missed. It was a tragedy to be certain, and yes I'd like to be biased and blame the driver. But I'm not blaming anyone right now. I'm just thinking about the time one of my best friends joked that he'd never see his twenty first birthday, and how he was right.

i know who jody (the driver of the car who hit jesse) and hes an idiot, hes always racing cars and driving ridiculously around warwick. i am sure that it wasnt this skatboarders fault, jody was always driving irradically when i saw hhim. its truely a shame that someone lost his life due to jodys negligence and immaturity.

Please, do me a favor, and all of you put your self in our shoes. Jesse wasn't trying to be hit by a car, he wasn't trying to do anything except the one thing he loved, and that was skate. You are all critizing him, and putting him at fault. If you are not here to pay your respects, then why are you here? To make a point? A point that, frankly, i'm sure nobody cares about. You can make any comment you'd like under your breath, 'Patty,' but you didn't know him.

Is this the Twilight Zone? Changing lanes at night is negligence? The driver obviously didn't see Jesse or his friend - whaddya think he's playing chicken? I know it's tough for you guys to criticize your friend's actions and maybe this isn't the time to do so but c'mon, that kind of comment shows your bias. And by the way, irregardless is not a word

I mean for the police to use the excuse that the driver was only in the mid to lower 50's (mph's) is unexceptable. They really need to sit back and rethink thier priorities. If police were not so busy trying to get 1 or 2 grams of weed oof the streets at a time the could spend more time doing thier real job PATROLLING!!!!! It's a shame what has happened here but yet it's another wake up call to how careless all sides can be. Irregardless Jody Hawkins should be charged with involun. manslaughter

I just want to say that for anyone who knows jesse he has never done a thing to anyone and this truely is a tragedy. He will always be loved and missed by all of his family and friends. Mistakes do happen granted but to be changing lanes towards ppl at that time of night is complete neglegance to begin with. There are lots of people who drive on cell phones and drive drunk that it is out of control. Plus the police need to do alot better at protecting the streets.

"His accident if for nobody who didn't know him to discuss." Lacey, that's absurd and you know it. I'd like you think about this another way - what if the driver of the car had also been killed? Would you feel the same about Jesse's decision to be skateboarding on Rt. 2 at night?
5741999Thursday, Jul 31 at 3:03 PM Lacey Brooks wrote ...
Everyone needs to just stop. Nobody is to blame for what happened. A life who affected people from all over the country was lost. Jesse was, and always will be, one of the best friends i ever had. If I read the news correctly the Driver didnt run from the sscene, he stopped. And it would be hard to move out of the way if there was another car on the side of you. A 16 year old should not be on the side of a dark road that late. No one should. It is just a tragedy and no one is really to blame.

It is terrible to say, but what was he doing there in the first place? Parents have to really start to pay attention and educate their children. It would also be nice if the police in this state would actually stop people who spped instead of driving around talking on their cell phones.
