WE JUST NEED TO GET A NEW GOVERNOR, THIS IDIOT DOESNT EVEN KNOW WHATS HE DOING. HE IS RAISING EVERYTHING FOR US BECAUSE HE DOESNT CARE, HE IS RICH AND HE DOESNT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT STAYING WITHOUT A JOB OR HAVING TO STRUGGLE IN THIS THOUGH ECONOMY TO BE ABLE TO PUT FOOD IN THE TABLE AND PAY BILLS, HE HAS PLENTY OF MONEY, HE SHOULD START GIVING HIS MONEY TO THE STATE, NOT TAKING OURS

How about we cut things such as SSI (state social security) that all the losers on the street collect. Oh plus they sell drugs and after arrested they still collect the money. Oh and welfare. How can you live in the projects all your life and continue living there for free, oh and don't forget the EBT they get. Free bus passes. Those are the leached to our society that we have to fix rather than hurting the municipal and state workers who have to work 25-30 years b4 they collect a pension

Jeff, I agree that alcohol should be taxed as well; with the exception of red wine (a health benefit), so that the burden is shared. However, our biggest problems are lack of efficiency. We need to make all buildings--especially public ones--efficient. There is so much waste, it should be illegal NOT to fix it. In addition, maybe having a four day work week with extended hours (4/10 hr days: mon-thr 8:00 - 6:00) and closing for three full days could reduce some expenses.

Instead of cutting cities and towns, how about getting rid of all those high paid consultants and your carefully placed friends from Old Stone Bank.????

I think the time has come where parents who have children enrolled in the public school system need to pay a tuition subsidy or use tax for the school based on some formula according to their tax returns. Young couples with children can no longer look to the retired to support their children in education. This may cause some parents to send their children to private schools thus reducing the need and expense for the current teacher / staff expense and increase the private education sector.

Moving in from Mass I have found the state was so curruptly run for so long that it will take an awfully long time to recover. I see to many people leaving the state to work. The RI government should focus on bringing business back to the state and keep its employees working in state. You would see more money come back to state.

I agree about raising the taxes on alcohol, ,maybe than we'd see less drunk driving deaths. I think that the welfare system needs to be revamped as well, ,we have way too many welching the system...wait, wasn't the welfare system supposed to be revamped years ago? Time to get freeloaders off the system, get to work!

how about raising the taxes on booze....punish the drinkers instead of the smokers for a change.maybe if a case of beer was 50 .00 instead of 20.00 there would be less need for state troopers doing sobriety checks every 2 miles...that could save some cake

The changes proposed by the governor will not bridge the gap for this fiscal year. There is no possible way these changes can be implemented in a timely way to be realized before June 30, 2009. The cuts in state aid will not be enough and the other changes require time be realized. Much of what was discussed is just window dressing.
