PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri, who has stood firmly against gay marriage, told a gay rights group that he is open to supporting a domestic partnership law in the state.
The Republican this week vetoed a bill giving domestic partners
the right to make funeral decisions for each other, saying it
represented an erosion of the principles of heterosexual marriage.
He spoke last month at an October fundraiser for the
Massachusetts Family Institute, which opposes gay marriage.
Queer Action of Rhode Island accused Carcieri of raising money
for a "hate group" and said the governor's veto was motivated by
"bigotry."
The Providence Journal reports that he met with representatives
of the group on Thursday night and said of domestic partnerships,
"Maybe it's something we should consider."

If the government offers marriage only to hetero couples then that is discrimination - regardless of tradition, it is unjust. Calling a union somthing other than marriage is intended to separate homosexuals from everyone else - and to perpetuate a myth that there is the slightest thing wrong with homosexuality - which the american medical association, american psychiatric association, american academy of pediatrics, and american bar association say there is not.

The definition of marriage should not be revised by politics or laws. Marriage is a religious covenant that government chose to recognize & grant certain priveleges & taxes to. If gay activists want to declare their own union & demand their own priveleges & taxes, then that effort should not be the attack on marriage that it has become.

Household families should have equal rights, irregardless of sexual orientation, race etc. However, it is unreasonable for the gays to want to change the long standing definion of marriage. They should coin their own term i.e. "garriage" AND then should not be denied equal rights to marriage. Hard core christians may then not be offended for "disrespecting" a sacrament. A reminder though we are "One nation under God" And in "God we Trust" but are free to worship "GOd", as u wish. Not Allah..

How did a conversation about basic American rights of attorney, partnership and property become a theological discourse? The separation of Church and State, to paraphrase George Washington's final inaugural address, was to protect the integrity of both the church and the state.

Listen, let's not get mad at each other. I will agree that it is a discrimination against gays if the laws just stops at them. The same God who is against that is also against unmarried heterosexual couples living together, abusive and unfaithful heterosexual married couples. So, until there is a law against those things as well, the government is discriminating against the homosexuals. To that I will agree. But, I will not agree to gay marriage, I just think they should not be a target.

How do you know that God does not say that, when you don't believe that He exists? The fact that you think He does not say something reveals that you know that He exists and can say things.

Lisa, I am not naive but I know that everyone believes in God whether they confess Him or not, since it is impossible to conceive of a being who does not exist. Ask any atheist what they say when an accident or something horrible is about to happen in front of them about what they say. They will all say "Oh my God!" or "Oh God!" because the sense of the existence of God is intrinsic and deep in our subconscious because God put it there: We are made in His image.

I take it that you do not know much about science. But, that's alright. Talk to any true scientist of any field in the 21st century and they will tell you that there has to be an intelligent designer for all the complexities of the world. Read from scientists of both sides and you will be more informed on what you should hold as truth.

You can't be serious? Number one God never said gay marriage is wrong. Number two do you really believe "God makes the sun rise at its appointed time or keeps the moon at the proper distance so that the tidal waves do not cause innondations on the earth" and all the other bull**** you said. It's called science. Welcome to the 21st century.

Lisa, but He has revealed Himself. Who do you think make the sun rise at its appointed time? Or keep the moon at the proper distance so that the tidal waves do not cause innondations on the earth? Or gives you a sense of right and wrong? Or gives you a sense of frustration when women as treated as less then men, because you understand that we are all equal created in His image? Or gives you this intelligent mind to process my reasoning? Or wakes you up from your sleep? It is God, not chance!

Wesley, are you so naive that you believe everyone in this world believes in "Your God". And by the way, have you met this so called "creator"? There are many different religions that millions of people live by. Until your creator makes himself known on this Earth, I don't want my laws governed by him.

Being a leader means that you have to make decisions that are unpopular, and no leader should shy away from principles just so they can please those who disagree with them. Otherwise, they will never stand for anything because no matter what you decide you will always offend someone of differing views. Gay marriage is wrong because God says so. Some may not like that but since He is the Creator, he determines what is right and what is wrong.

It is totally wrong and couterproductive to allow your religious beliefs to shape your public service decisions. Mr. Caccieri, that is why the framers of the constitutuion separated church and state.

don't think the government should even be involved in marriage- marriage should be civil. That way, you could simply choose for yourself who gets to see you in the hospital or who gets your goods when you die. What if someone wants their brother or friend or other non-romantic relation to handle such things?

I think that if two people love each other it does not matter whether they are Gay or staight. I think that it should allowed to be up to the person himself who he wants to be his beneficiary or make funeral choices or arrangements

Well g all of a sudden he changes his mind? and is now open to domestic partners? I think he should check in with Mr T the Big man to make sure his position will not make him any less catholic like it dose Mr kennedy's decision to support abortion . This is why the church needs to stay separated from the state unless they want to start paying taxes like the rest of us do.
