RI Marijuana Panel Meets for First Time

Chris Boardman

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Senate panel created to consider Rhode Island's marijuana laws has met for the first time.

The nine-member panel created in July met Wednesday and Chairman Joshua Miller said in his opening remarks that the commission will focus on examining data on marijuana arrests and how much they cost the state.

Some advocates of decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana say police resources could better be spent elsewhere.

Miller says he's open-minded. The Democratic Senator from
Cranston did not rule out a discussion along the way about
legalizing, and even taxing, the recreational use of marijuana.

The panel includes attorneys, medical professionals and
academics. There are no law enforcement representatives on the commission.

The difference between alcohol and cannabis, my misguided anonymous friend, is that alcohol has killed countless people and not one single death has ever been contributed to marijuana. It is impossible to overdose. Oh and what makes you think people can't control their dose to their liking? Not everyone wants to get super high all of the time. In fact it is MUCH easier to control your dose with pot because the effects come on very quickly, so you always know where you're at.

Some here claim legalizing weed will cause an increase in the number of people who smoke it, but the facts don't support it. America, where pot is illegal, is the #1 consumer of pot. Countries that have decriminalized it have seen their usage rates lower. Why? Because when it's illegal, it is not regulated by the state and everyone knows someone who knows a drug dealer, so it's easy to get. Once the state regulates it, it becomes much harder for kids to get their hands on it. Think about it.

Decriminalizing marijuana will solve some problems but create others. Whatever adults do, teenagers will do more. Occasional cannabis smoking by adults is no more harmful than occasional alcohol use. The brains of adolescents have not fully developed and THC slows and stops neurological development. There won't be any great revenue from taxing sales of marijuana because enforcement is impossible. Go ahead and legalize it but be prepared for the consequences of unregulated drug use and abuse.
