City Council Takes Up Trash Troubles

Chris Boardman

The Providence recycling problems, two weeks in the making, came to a head Thursday night at a City Council meeting. Both residents and city councilors, fed up with the piles of trash littering the city's streets, urged Mayor David Cicilline and the CIty of Providence to address the issues complicating the new recycling program, as quickly as possible.

ABC 6 Reporter Erica Ricci has the story from Providence City Hall.

For several years, we have worked very hard to clean up our trash and get rid of the rats, planting trees on our streets, and fixing our city sidewalks, and the Mayor has managed to destroy all our progress in just 3 weeks. Thanks Dave, you will pay for this!

We are preparing a law suite against David Cicilline for negligence and creating a safety hazard and health hazard. The Mayor's subordinates admitted that he created these hazards and are willing to take the stand against him. There is no chance that the Mayor will win and he will probably be thrown out of office for this!

Very innovative! I wonder if DPW would let us use screws to attach our blue and green recycling bins to our big green trash bins. This would solve all our problems and I dont think that they would get stolen if they were actually attached to the big green bin. BRILLIANT!

The one and only solution that I see for this recycling problem is "High Technology Designed" trash bins. The new design would look similar to the large green trash bins, however, it would have a small recycling bin attached to each side of it. Problem solved. Using these new high technology bins would meet the recycling requirement every time we put a bin on the sidewalk and guarantee that our trash gets removed every week. No need to thank me, I am just trying to help :-)

The Mayor should have thought of this. We should be allowed to put out 1 blue recy bin and 1 green recy bin. What's so hard about that? This should make the Mayor happy because he got his recycling and the people happy because they dont have to put out "one hundred million" recycling bins! It's a Win-Win situation. Now, why cant Cicilinni think like this?

Because I live in a rough section of Providence, now I have to be on 24 hour guard duty to watch my golden recycling bins so they dont get stolen and my trash gets picked-up. Now this is a "Quality of Life" issue as well as a "Health Hazard" issue and a "Safety Hazard" issue. Come on Mayor Cicilinni...Get with the program!

Many of us recycle correctly and get our trashed removed. HOWEVER, we should not have to live in the middle of piles of trash because our neighbors trash was not picked up. Also, we should not suffer the burdon of our trash not being removed just because a recycling bin may get stolen in the middle of the night or the wind blows a bin down the street. And what about the people who actually put out their recycling bins and DONT get their trash removed. A SERIOUS HEALTH/SAFETY HAZARD AND NEGLECT!

You people are just lazy!!! put out your bins the right way and your trash will be picked up! Stop crying about it an do it..and FYI i called City Hall and got thru and they were very helpful DPW was not! It's so simple to every Big green can you need two recycling bins they don't have to be from DPW use your own and write recycle on the side & if it gets stolen make a police report and take it to DPW and they replace it for free, that is what i was told today when i called City Hall.

use your own bins...they are less expensive and less prone to theft if you go to a department store they are $4. Coming from a multi family homeowner, my neighborhood is at at 90% recycling, you helped destroy the planet try making it right by recycling.

Can somebody please tell us if we can make our own recycling bins because this can get pretty expensive after they keep getting stolen. Why should we pay DPW for them when we could probably make our own. Maybe we can write the word "plastic" on one and the word "paper" on the other. I think that we can all agree that recycling bins are worth their weight in gold, right now. Does anybody have any info on this, it would be very helpful.

Somebody please comment on what I am about to say!!! Does anyone else think that the emphasis on recycling should be on recycling? What I mean is...If you do not put out enough recycling bins, they DPW should put a sticker on the recycling bins and leave the recycling bins behind...NOT THE TRASH BINS!

And what about the "Windy Day Theory"? These recycling bins are so small and so light that a small wind will blow them down the street. And then, guess what? DPW will not remove your trash because the recycling bins were not placed next to your green trash bins. WE NEED BIGGER RECYCLING BINS AND FEWER OF THEM!!!

The likelihood of your recycling bins getting stolen in some of these tough neighborhoods in Providence is very high!! It is not fair to citizens if their trash is not picked up just because they get one their cans stolen in the middle of the night!!!

Dump it on the steps of City Hall??? Let's do one better and dump it on Cicilline's front lawn or right on his office desk. I can't believe this. I've lived in 9 different states and NEVER had my trash left on the curb for 3 weeks. I spend 2 weeks a year at home (I'm Military) and this is what I find waiting for me? Come on MAN! Think before you execute something like this. Should have tried harder to reach residents before a stunt like this extreme!

I live in Mt. Pleasant also. NONE of my trash was picked up. My landlord WILL NOT buy the bins and I refuse to pay for them myself. I have a wife and 3 step-daughters to think of. $10 could by dinner for a night. I don't see any reason for the trash to be sitting outside like this other than pure STUPIDITY AND LAZINESS! The plan was not thought put thoroughly nor was it properly executed. No matter what you do if the residents don't want to recycle they are just going to put out the bins empty.

Count me as another who always recycles. Last night I left two big trash cans, two green recyle bins and one blue recycle bin. Recycling was taken, but trash was not. I'm playing by the rules, but the trash collectors are not. Can I fine them for not doing their job?

Most of you people writing here who are complimenting these guys have obviously NO CLUE whats going on. I'm not an absentee landlord. I'm at my properties EVERY DAY ! I BOUGHT the bins and they were immediately stolen ! And BTW, I do NOT require 1 green and 1 blue bin for every large can. Are you kidding me? No one is against recycling, you folks obviously think everyone who live in Providence are stupid. I live on the east side and the bins were overflowing here, the execution was flawed !

I always recycle, however, my trash is still on the side walk waiting to be taken away. This is ridiculous..they picked up my recycle bins but not my trash. Please correct this situation at your earliest convenience. WE ALL feel that the People in this area are being discriminated against. That may not be true but that's how it seems. This is an ongoing problem that I don't think the City of Providence needs at this time. Please keep in mind we are also taxpayers. We will now videotape.

The mayor obviously did not do his homework and study the successful waste management systems in the nearby cities. Woonsocket is often scoffed at by officials in Providence but its waste management program is light years ahead of the Providence system. You can't steal a 60 gallon bin!!!! Unless the mayor stops charging for the bins the city's trash and rat problem will continue.

Recycling is not going to go away but with these economic times 5 bucks a bin is forcing a lot of people to steal the bins. The past two weeks i have put out my bins along with my trash and both weeks the 12 bins I have put out have gotten stolen. This theft kept me from having my trash picked up. 2weeks worth of trash now sits by the curb. DPW says you need a police report to replace the bins.It took me 3 hours to go to city hall for proof of ownership, then to the Pol. station and back 2 DPW
