The only ones gaining anything from Mayor Cicilline's new recycling program are the stupid Providence City Rats! Mayor Cicilline cares more about the rats in Providence than he does for the citizens who actually voted for him. Well guess what...the next election, the same people whoes trash he did not remove, are going to vote him right out of office.

This is ridiculas! Why should the landlord have to provide the bins? This has nothing to do with the landlord. The tenants get their trash picked up for FREE! They need only to follow a couple of rules. It just goes to show how people are not good at following a couple of rules. I see the same every day when driving in RI. People break the rules while driving too! Most tenants are lazy. Some home owners too!

The recycling program is necessary and Cicilline is right for sticking to his guns. The only problem is that the City did a terrible job of advertising the program before it went into effect. TV and radio ads starting in September could have gone a long way.

If you don't use the city recycling bins (or don't want to pay for them), you can use your own bins but you need to put one of those "Green Up Providence" stickers on the bin. The stickers are available for free where they sell the bins. And be sure to have 1 green bin and 1 blue bin for each unit! That means 3 green and 3 blue for a three-family house. It seems like they don't pick up any trash if all of the units don't participate.

It is my understanding that the city is to pick up any recycling as long as it is in a bin marked for recycling. Unfortunately we are a very large family in a single family home and we produce more recycling than the 'provided' bins allow. We have used trash cans in the past spray painted with the words Recycle on them and have never had a problem. In the past 3 weeks they have taken my recycling bins and all yet leave my trash on the sidewalk. This is getting ridiculous!

What are the prices of the fine for 1st, 2nd or 3rd violation? Who will be fined the landlord or tenant, why, and how will it be proven who is at fault? How will the fines be calculated? Will it be a certain fine amount by the amount of recycling bins that are missing, or by the amount of big green bins that are put on the street? We have a legal rite to know the answers to these questions. This is not as easy as the the Mayors office is making it out to be. We all need more information.

I have 1 house that Providence is charging me taxes on $340,000 and I only paid $86,000 and I can't even sell it for $125,000. Now, Mayor is trying to rip us off even more by charging us a fine for recycling violations when we never got a list of the rules and how the violations will be justified and who will be at fault...landldord/tenant. This is totally messed up!

However, for the Mayor to turn his back on the tax paying citizens and refusing to remove the trash is down right insobordination!

The Mayor should 100% stick to his position. Residents are responsible for obeying laws AND for practicing good environmental stewardship, though it is unfortunate that a law had to be passed in the first place to accomplish this. Further, residents should re-evaluate their household waste production since it appears out of hand; if they weren't so wasteful (and recycled) there would be considerably less garbage on the curb in the first place. They made their own 'health hazard'.

Does anyone out there REALLY think that the typical Providence Tenant cares ? A large % of Prov residents are tenants you know. This will all get dumped on homeowners who have already lost up to 75% of their property's values. Do you really think that tenants are going to comply? So the property ownere will be running to their rentals taking out the sorted trash for their tenants? Great! America, gotta love it. Like I said before, use some of my TARP money to buy some more people.

Ok everybody, I think that I owe you all an apology. I admit that I made a big mistake and will cancel the recycling program for 4 weeks while I think of a better solution. The new recycling rule will be a requirement for 1 blue recy bin and 1 green recy bin per household. Also, if two recy bins (blue and green) are not put out on trash day, the trash will still be removed, however, the home owner will receive a $10 citation. You will all receive a notice of this in the mail shortly.

I agree that this program was handled in the worst way. I have recycled before and will continue to recycle, but my neighbors, who are single moms with kids they can barely afford to feed and clothe, are not going to buy recycling bins-the garbage will pile up and the rats will be back. Not very well thought out if you ask me. Boston gave everyone a recycle garbage can-probably got the money through a federal program. No thinking at City Hall.

Let me see, I buy recycle bins for my house, a 3-family so I need 6 of them, and I must expect that everyone else is going to buy theirs too and bring them out every week even if they are empty until AFTER the regular trash is picked up? For those of you bringing up the redeemables for money as a problem, that is a moot point. There are many many many other items that can be recycled. Recycle what you can't get your money back on like milk bottles and paper and cardboard, and plastics that your food came in. Redeem for money those that can be redeemed if you choose but don't say that is the only thing that you use that can be recycled and that is why you shouldn't do it.
