Late Rep. Slater's Son Sworn in Monday

The Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A lawmaker-elect from Providence will be sworn in next week to fill a seat that his late father held for 15 years.

Democrat Scott Slater won a special election earlier this month to succeed his father, Rep. Thomas Slater, who died of cancer in August.

Slater is scheduled to take the oath of office in front of Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis on Monday afternoon. House Speaker William Murphy will speak at the ceremony.

Slater's father worked successfully to legalize medical marijuana in Rhode Island and was a fierce critic of state budget cuts that hurt the poor.
