22 Overnight Car Break-ins in Wareham

Chris Boardman

The Wareham Police Department is investigating a series of overnight breaks into motor vehicles in a residential section of East Wareham. Twenty two motor vehicles were broken into while parked in their driveways. All of the vehicles that were targeted were unlocked. Police dispatchers began receiving reports from homeowners at around 0630 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 reporting the breaks. Investigating officer Kevin Reilly reported items that were stolen included an Ipod, an XM radio, a cell phone, and loose change.

Thieves will walk through neighborhoods or mall parking lots and look into car windows for valuables. If they see anything, even loose change, they will lift the door handle to see if it is unlocked and be in and out in seconds", reports public information officer William Fihlman.

Preventative measures include always locking your car and never leave valuables in plain sight. If you are out for a day of shopping, put your purchases in the trunk. At home, leave a light on overnight or install motion activated flood lights. Don't leave laptops, cell phones, GPS units, or purses in you car overnight. If you see any suspicious activity, call 911 immediately.

I have family in wareham I just hope none of them was targeted. With the econamy the way it has been lately I'm not suprised at all by this. It's actually happening all over. But I never expected it in wareham. Thats always been a very nice and quiet area. But people insist on leaving there cars unlocked and they really shouldn't do that. I hope they get the jerks that did this.
