The education system is not getting harder, it's starting to look more normal. I have three nieces who's reading and math skills in the 9th grade are equivalent to my reading and math skills in the 6th grade when I was in school. To me that is a terrifying thing and a loud alarm that our school system is failing. My opinion...Toughen the Graduation requirements. Meanwhile parents should be proactive in teaching their kids how important a good education is.

I believe utilizing the NECAP “tool” as a test will have dire consequences, for Students and for all Rhode Island Citizens. Teachers will begin teaching the NECAP, which will mean drastic changes in curriculum. With School Budgets so tight, who will fund more changes? So we will send entire Graduating Classes out who can take the NECAP because they spent two years being taught how to take it, but they have learned very little about English Literature, History, Science, the Arts or Music?

Trigonometry is on the math section of the test, which many students have not yet taken by 11th grade, yet 1/3 of every student’s graduation requirement will depend upon how well they do on this test. What is more, the test is administered annually in the fall of 11th grade. What is the point of a "graduation" test that covers what you learned in 9th and 10th grades? The NECAP Test was designed to be a tool to check the system and provide feedback to Educators and Administrators.

I am writing this letter to get the message out to Parents and Guardians of Rhode Island Students about proposed changes to high school graduation requirements, which could be approved September 3, 2008. The proposed change would make the state tests in Math and English currently being administered to 11th graders count for 1/3 of a Student’s graduation requirements. Currently, the test (NECAP test) only counts toward 10 percent.

This Veterans shelter is a very sad case, it should be put under better management. Hopefully that happens soon.
