PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The city of Providence broke in a new marathon Sunday.
The race debuted as part of The Cox Providence Rhode Races, which also included a half marathon and a five-kilometer run.
The marathon didn't offer prize money in its first year, but it is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
Some 3,000 runners took to the streets of the capitol city, answering the starting gun at 9:00 am.
The 5k race was run downtown, with Cumberland's Chris Magill and Gabrielle Carbonneau from Rehoboth winning their respective categories.
The half marathon men's winner, Barrington's Sean Livingston, won in the time of 1:12:07, and Providence's own Heather Crosby was the top woman at 1:30:31.
And Blaine Moore of Portland, Maine made history by winning Providence's first marathon with a time of 2:43:28 running in the rain.
