Cranston Firefighter was Loved, Respected by Co-workers and Family

John Eagan

A child's birthday party in a quiet Cranston neighborhood suddenly took a deadly turn this weekend.
Now a Cranston man is accused of shooting and killing his neighbor in broad daylight.
The incident happened on Daisy Street around 3 pm Sunday afternoon.
Officials say some of the kids from the birthday party had wandered into the yard of retired Providence police officer Nick Gianquitti.
That is when Witnesses say an argument broke out between Gianquitti and the man hosting the party, Cranston firefighter James Pagano.
Police say the fight escalated to the point where Gianquitti allegedly grabbed a gun and shot Pagano dead.
Gianquitti was arraigned Monday morning on murder charges in 3rd District Court.
He is being held without bail at the ACI and is due back in court in 2 weeks.
According to  Cranston Fire Chief James Gumbley, Pagano, a firefighter since 1991, was a well-liked and well-respected member of the department.
He leaves behind his wife and two young children.
ABC 6 reporter Parker Gavigan has more...

I won't argue with you guys, it's obvious that you were all standing there watching as it happened, I was not. Wait and see when all the facts from court hit the news. Then we'll see.

So NORMAN, why did Gianquitti shoot Pagano? Because last time I checked, he came out of his house swearing at the kids, Pagano walked over and asked him not to swear at his children, and then Gianquitti shot Pagano in the back. If this fight was self defense, wouldn't Pagano have been facing towards Gianquitti? Sounds like murder to me buddy.

Friday, May 23 at 10:38 AM Jimmy wrote ...

Actually Norman, it appears you have been sleeping through all of this. As I said already, I live in the neighborhood where this incident occurred. The ball went onto Gianquitti's lawn, and he came out with his gun ALREADY ON HIM. This was before Pagano ever showed up. Obviously, he did come out ready to use his gun because of a ball rolling onto his lawn. THE MAN IS CRAZY! As I already said, you people need to get your facts right before making assumptions.

DOM'S comment sounds like he's been sleeping through all of this. This guy did'nt come out shooting because a ball rolled onto his lawn. Wait and see what comes out at trial, there will be some surprises for everyone. GO BACK TO SLEEP DOM !! WE'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE.

Jimmy, so did Pagano attack Gianquitti?

Thursday, May 22 at 3:12 PM Dom wrote ...

What is wrong with you people. The guy shot someone over a ball going into his yard. I didn't realize it was ok to kill someone over A CHILD'S TOY!!! Yea kids might be annoying sometimes, but that is no reason to KILL someone. This guy's life was not threatened at all by Pagano. THINK PEOPLE, would the guy be in jail right now without bail if the police thought the shooting was in self defense. Don't you think he would have called the police afterwards himself if it was self defense!!

Thursday, May 22 at 3:07 PM Tom wrote ...

WOW! There are some ignorant people here! I am a friend of the Pagano family. ANYONE here who thinks it's ok to "protect your property" by pulling a gun are just plain senseless and need counseling. Gianquitti TOOK A LIFE!!! Over what??? A ding in his precious car??? A scuff on his lawn??? Those POSSESSIONS can be replaced. A LIFE IS IRREPLACEABLE! Now a wife has no husband and a child has no father because someone had a permit to own a gun and made a terrible decision. God Bless Jimmy. RIP

Thursday, May 22 at 3:01 PM Jimmy wrote ...

Dave is completely right with this one BOB. I happen to live in the neighborhood where this incident occured. In an ideal situation, Pagano could have called the police. What you don't realize is that this whole event happened in a matter of seconds. One second, Pagano was talking to the killer, the next, he was shot. In fact, Pagano turned around and began walking back towards his house when the killer shot him from behind. You guys need to get your facts right before you make assumptions.

Thursday, May 22 at 2:54 PM George from Cranston wrote ...

I agree with what BOB said.

First I would like to say that I am not condoning this killing, but we don't know all the facts and no one should rush to judgement. "Killing someone in cold blood?" do you really know, where they in the midst of a battle? Pagano looked a lot bigger than Gianquitti. What would you do if someone attacked you? If Pagano had injured Gianquitti badly would it have been right? Let's mourn for the families affected by this tragedy.

Thursday, May 22 at 2:42 PM Anonymous wrote ...

I think everyone has to wait for all the facts. It is always a tragedy for someone to lose a life and I feel for both families. If it is true that Pagano attacked him at his door, then it's not about defending his grass it's about defending his life. What if Pagano had accidentally killed Gianquitti, then who would be the bad guy? We don't know what really went on yet, so please don't rush to judge. Losing a father/husband is a tragic thing and I don't want to come across as condoning this.

If he took it upon himself to go and start it up then....things can happen. He's going to jail now..and thats it.

Thursday, May 22 at 12:47 PM Dave wrote ...

I can not believe the comments I have seen on this message board! It's one thing to protect yourself and your property. It's completely different to kill somebody in cold blood. I don't know where this idea came from that the victim was the bad guy pounding on the killer's door, trying to hurt him. He was just trying to protect his family from maniacs like this guy. It's pathetic that people can feel bad more for the killer than the victim. This guy is clearly insane.

Hey Ben, Your a moron, as are those that somehow condone this action. As a responsible gun owner I can assure you that a ball rolling onto your property, much less a verbal argument, does not justify lethal force. In fact, there are very few scenarios which justify such force. You'd think this idiot would know the difference. FYI. This guy is not a retired officer. If he was only injured on patrol he'd still have a desk job now. You figure out why he's no longer on the force.

Tuesday, May 20 at 10:44 PM Anonymous wrote ...

A senseless tragedy for all involved, and understandably, everyone has painted Gianquitti as the bad guy, after all, a man died. However, I wonder at Pagano's actions in this. He went to Gianquitti's front door, pounded on it, and then started a fight in front of all those children who were attending his son's birthday party, children he was responsible for keeping safe! Why didn't he just call the police! Gianquitti, confronted by an angry, larger man, may have felt his life was threatened.

Pagano went over because the neighbor cursed out his little girl. He told him not to speak to his daughter like that and to see him if there was a problem. It was apparently over a ball.
