Pregnancy Pact Update: School Doctor and Nurse Resigned After School Forbade Them from Handing Out Birth Control

John Eagan

Parents across New England are outraged after learning of a pact ending with almost 20 teens pregnant at a school in Gloucester.  The small Massachusetts fishing town has more than four times the number of pregnancies the school had last year.

Now ABC 6 has learned that a school doctor and nurse quit after being told they couldn't hand out birth control at that school.

17-year old Kyla Brown is one of those pregnant high schoolers.  Brown says she was not part of the pact, but says she knew some girls who wanted to get pregnant.  Shockingly, one of the possible fathers is a 24-year -old
homeless man.

The school plans to vote again this summer on whether to provide contraceptives.

The fact that the doctor and nurse resigned in protest for not being allowed to hand out contraceptives to students w/o parental permission is irrelevent to this story. These girls set out to get pregnant, completely apart from that issue. They're pregnant b/c they wanted to be, not b/c a school dr. and nurse weren't allowed to give them condoms.

I grew up having as normal of a life as any one of you did. Just because someones young doens't mean they won't be able to raise a child. Yes it's hard, but as long as they try they can do it. And JB, don't call these girls idiots, if they try, they will be ok.

I don't know what these girls were thinking. The reality of having their own child will hit them, and hit them hard. Getting pregnant that young is not something to celebrate over. A mother needs to be financially stable, she needs to have time, patience, and love. Most teenagers don't have those qualities. What makes them think that pregnancy will bring it out in them? They're just not ready. It's as simple as that.

I feel bad for the unborn babies. These teenage girls have no idea what they are getting into, and I highly doubt they are ready to give up their teenage years of parties, dances, shopping, and just being girls for dirty diapers, sleepless nights, and never having time for themselves. Motherhood is wonderful but not for a teenager, I hope they are considering adoption. I am a 23yr old mother of two and am very lucky that I had my parents support and am now happliy married. Its not an easy road

What a bunch of idiots... They should be ashamed of themselves. School daycare programs are to help people in legitimate need, not as a way to abdicate responsibility. I'm a liberal and don't mind social programs to help those in need, but I don't pay taxes so some little kid can have a baby for fun and not have to worry about anything.
