PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence's July Fourth fireworks display has been canceled after the fire marshal's office determined they were set off too close to buildings on Smith Hill.
Lynne McCormack, director of Arts, Culture and Tourism, says officials tried to find an alternate site, but couldn't come up with one in time for this year.
Providence has held July Fourth fireworks over the Statehouse since 2005. They are launched from a state-owned parking lot on State Street.
The fire marshal's office has in the past allowed the fireworks displays.
But complaints by owners of a nearby building, and the discovery of burns on the roof of the state medical examiner's office, prompted the fire marshal to remeasure whether the fireworks were a safe distance from buildings.
It was determined they were not.

This is a shame. Mayor you should have thought of this before now as well as other public officials. Providence is in the comeback mode of being a place we all can enjoy again. This is really not well thought through at all. Every major city manages to have a big party for its people. Providence is acting small and inept, and we know we are not. Our public officials need to take stock of this dibacle. We are proud of our city and this does not demonstrate our pride at all.

Providence is falling apart. It is one of the worst cities. A new mayor is DEFINATELY needed. He has NO idea what he is doing. There have been more problems (with him in office) than him making it better. Why dont you get up and do something

Providence is an absolute joke. What city doesn't have fireworks on July 4th? Almost every TOWN in the country has them, certainly every city but Providence.

Why is it that the people of providence always have to go to some other town to see fireworks?I have four little kids and for once I will like to stay in my own town to enjoy some fire works.
