Women Being Robbed of Purses While Mourning in Pawtucket Cemetery

John Eagan

No bodies have been exhumed and no graves have been robbed.  But 3 separate thefts of the living over 3 weeks at the Saint Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket has many wondering how low a criminal can stoop.

Local women are being ripped off at their most vulnerable moments, while mourning.  Police say the thief waits until women are away from their unlocked cars, then pounce on their purses.  So when the victims come back from the grave sites of loved ones they are visiting, the thief is long gone with all their valuables.

The 3 robberies happened on June 15th, 22nd, and July 3rd.  Pawtucket Police have stepped up patrols around the Smithfield Avenue site, but the cemetery has more than 100 acres in which to cover.

What Do You Think of the State's New Ability to Track Illegal Immigrants?

  • I Like it, illegal immigrants are finding work easily while I rot in line at the unemployment office
  • Bad Idea, These people are taking sub-minimum wage jobs anyway and actual citizens are getting snared in this E-Verify system
