Providence Woman Says City is to Blame for Raw Sewage in Her Basement

John Eagan

If raw sewage was backing up into your basement, it seems like the search for answers should be an easy one, right?  But it is not so for one Providence family.

Linda Gillis has been calling the Department of Public Works to get them to check the sewer line outside of her Payton Street home since the sewage problem surfaced.  This is because a professional crew snaked her line and told her it was fine, and that the problem is where her pipe meets the city line.

The private workers had lifted the street's manhole cover and found sand and debris which they say needed to be removed to relieve the problem.  But the city's Director of Public Works says his staff checked it out and the city sewer line is functioning and running properly.  He says the problem is the lateral between the city's line and Gillis' line, and that it is her responsibility to fix.

Meanwhile, Gillis' basement is a mess and her family has been living with the leak and the awful smell for 3 weeks.

ABC 6 reporter Coleen Harry has more on Linda Gillis' search for a solution...

I wish you luck. I had a similar problem here in Toronto Canada. The city won't admit the problem because they don't want to pay for it. Our whole street was flooded last month and the city did nothing.
