We are in the middle of a summer vacation, but Rhode Island students and teachers are still getting graded.
The state education department just released a report outlining how our schools measure up. And nearly 3 out of 4 Rhode Island schools met all of the 2007 and 2008 targets set by the federal 'No Child Left Behind Act'.
The classifications, based on last years results for math, reading, and writing, showed 82% of elementary schools and 72% of middle schools met their targets. Forty-six percent of the high schools in Rhode Island met their targets.
Among the 27% of schools that missed one or more of their annual targets, 8% missed targets for the first time and are classified as 'caution schools'. Those who have missed their target for a few years, which 19% are classified as making insufficient progress, may face changes.
