Firefighter Killed in Accident a Father Figure to Many Colleagues

The South Kingstown firefighter who died after suffering a major head injury at the fire station has been identified.

Assistant Chief Allan "Pickles" LePage, age 67, a 42-year active member of the fire district died Tuesday from injuries sustained as a result of a June 29, accident at the Kingston Fire Station.  He was transported by South Kingston rescue to South County hospital where he was treated and then transferred by air ambulance to RI Hospital's trauma center.  The accident is currently being investigated and reconstructed.

LePage was returning from a car accident response at the time of the accident. He was also employed in a  maintenance position, and is survived by a wife and child.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A volunteer firefighter in South Kingstown has died after suffering a major head injury at the fire station.

The firefighter, whose name has not been released, was a senior member of the Kingston Fire District in South Kingstown.

Charlestown Police Lt. Patrick McMahon, who is serving as a spokesman, said the firefighter died Tuesday after being flown to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.

Officials have not released details of the accident but say it occurred inside one of the apparatus bays as the firefighter was working on a ladder truck.

Another news conference was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.      

McMahon says the incident is under investigation by the South Kingstown police, the state Department of Labor and Training and a
private safety consultant.

It is with deep regret that Chief Nathan Barrington of the Kingston (RI) Fire District announces the passing of the Kingston firefighter who sustained serious injuries as a result of a June 29th accident at the Kingston Fire Station.  The identity of the firefighter is being withheld as additional family members have yet to be contacted.  Funeral arraignments will be announced as that information is provided.
