Landfill Audit Shows Millions in Taxpayer Cash Wasted

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - An audit of the state's Central Landfill
in Johnston finds waste, mismanagement and ethical breaches costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

The forensic audit, released Tuesday by the state Department of
Administration, finds that the previous management of the Rhode
Island Resource Recovery Corporation made questionable real estate decisions, awarded no-bid contracts, and paid out bonuses it
shouldn't have. The audit also found evidence of worker's
compensation fraud and a lack of oversight on employee overtime.

Michael O'Connell, has been head of the dump since 2007, and blew the whistle on the problems.

The state police told the Providence Journal that they conducted
their own investigation, and there will be no criminal charges.
